And how, you know, that aspect changes their 00:03:32.360 --> 00:03:35.650 life, the absence. But whatever your experiences 00:03:35.650 --> 00:03:38.969 with your parents on this earth, good, bad, absent, 00:03:39.050 --> 00:03:41.590 or some kind of crazy mix of all of it, right, 00:03:41.710 --> 00:03:44.210 that impacts our lives. I had a great childhood. But it is my Heavenly Father that 00:04:36.060 --> 00:04:40.980 has the impact, the eternal, the internal. All 00:04:40.980 --> 00:04:44.040 of that comes from my Heavenly Father. I love 00:04:44.040 --> 00:04:46.300 my wife. I love my children. I love my grandchildren. 00:04:46.560 --> 00:04:51.040 They love me. right? And Jesus was very clarifying 00:05:07.360 --> 00:05:10.519 in a discussion that he had in John chapter eight. 00:05:10.639 --> 00:05:13.000 You can get ready to flip there as he's talking 00:05:13.000 --> 00:05:17.199 to some Jews about who their father is. In a 00:05:17.199 --> 00:05:20.569 sense, Jesus is in a conversation with a group 00:05:20.569 --> 00:05:23.009 of Jews, and he's asking them this question, 00:05:23.110 --> 00:05:26.310 and I'm paraphrasing, of course. Jesus was asking 00:05:26.310 --> 00:05:29.689 them, who's your daddy? Who's your daddy? Turn 00:05:29.689 --> 00:05:31.209 to somebody beside you right now. You can have 00:05:31.209 --> 00:05:32.850 a little fun with this. Say, who's your daddy? 00:05:33.069 --> 00:05:36.410 Come on. Who's your daddy? Because in John chapter 00:05:36.410 --> 00:05:40.019 8, Jesus asked this question. Who's your daddy? 00:05:40.199 --> 00:05:42.420 While you're turning, I'm going to pray over 00:05:42.420 --> 00:05:44.720 us hearing God's word. Father, we thank you for 00:05:44.720 --> 00:05:46.560 this day. Lord, we know that your word is blessed. 00:05:46.699 --> 00:05:48.939 We know that your word is truth. Well, 00:06:08.100 --> 00:06:09.259 let me give you a little background before we 00:06:09.259 --> 00:06:12.589 jump into this portion of Scripture. In John 00:06:12.589 --> 00:06:14.829 chapter 8, just a little earlier in this chapter, 00:06:15.110 --> 00:06:17.649 Pharisees bring a woman that they catch in the 00:06:17.649 --> 00:06:20.329 act of adultery before Jesus. And they do this 00:06:20.329 --> 00:06:23.550 not only to condemn the woman, but they actually 00:06:23.550 --> 00:06:26.470 have an ulterior motive in this. Jesus is speaking 00:06:26.470 --> 00:06:29.269 in a public square out in the temple, out in 00:06:29.269 --> 00:06:31.290 the outer court, and they bring this woman who 00:06:31.290 --> 00:06:33.529 was caught in adultery. They throw her before 00:06:33.529 --> 00:06:35.990 Jesus, and what they're expecting him to do is 00:06:35.990 --> 00:06:38.990 to say, stoner. And they're not there because 00:06:38.990 --> 00:06:41.519 they're righteous. They're not. there dragging 00:06:41.519 --> 00:06:43.800 this woman into the public square because they 00:06:43.800 --> 00:06:45.879 want to see justice done according to the mosaic 00:06:45.879 --> 00:06:48.180 law of the time. They're doing this because they're 00:06:48.180 --> 00:06:51.259 plotting against Jesus. The underlying reason 00:06:51.259 --> 00:06:54.300 is they're scheming a scenario of some kind where 00:06:54.300 --> 00:06:56.860 they can get Jesus to trip up and do the wrong 00:06:56.860 --> 00:06:59.259 thing or say the wrong thing in a public sector. 00:06:59.500 --> 00:07:01.879 They want to make sure that they're trying to 00:07:01.879 --> 00:07:06.160 get Jesus to really kind of trip up in his speech 00:07:06.160 --> 00:07:09.079 and in his actions so that the public will cry 00:07:09.079 --> 00:07:12.839 out and actually condemn Jesus to death. They 00:07:12.839 --> 00:07:15.500 want him to die. The Pharisees and multiple... 00:07:16.379 --> 00:07:18.860 portions of these Jews, they want to see Jesus 00:07:18.860 --> 00:07:21.319 out of the picture. They don't believe in him. 00:07:21.379 --> 00:07:23.199 They don't believe he's the son of God. They 00:07:23.199 --> 00:07:25.379 believe he's a false prophet and they want him 00:07:25.379 --> 00:07:27.500 out of the way, but they don't want the, they 00:07:27.500 --> 00:07:29.500 don't want the evil pointing back to them. They 00:07:29.500 --> 00:07:32.339 want somebody to take him out for him. And when 00:07:32.339 --> 00:07:35.579 Jesus confronts the ones who actually go to stone 00:07:35.579 --> 00:07:37.600 this woman, those who are going to be willing 00:07:37.600 --> 00:07:39.500 to throw the stones and kill this woman who was 00:07:39.500 --> 00:07:41.740 caught in adultery, he starts to get down in 00:07:41.740 --> 00:07:44.120 the sand or in the dirt, and he starts to write 00:07:44.120 --> 00:07:46.160 something out. The Word of God doesn't tell us 00:07:46.160 --> 00:07:49.100 what it is, but I think it was their sins. Because 00:07:49.100 --> 00:07:52.339 they froze in place, and one by one, they walk 00:07:52.339 --> 00:07:56.639 away, and they leave this woman. And Jesus, of 00:07:56.639 --> 00:07:59.420 course, compassionately says, woman, where are 00:07:59.420 --> 00:08:02.600 these accusers of yours? And she said, they're 00:08:02.600 --> 00:08:05.920 gone. And I'm, again, paraphrasing. And Jesus 00:08:05.920 --> 00:08:09.000 told her, go and sin no more. And she leaves. 00:08:09.860 --> 00:08:13.360 They had a plan. They had a scheme. And it's 00:08:13.360 --> 00:08:16.180 following this that they engage in a public discussion 00:08:16.180 --> 00:08:19.819 or debate in an effort to discredit Jesus. Plan 00:08:19.819 --> 00:08:23.519 A failed, so they go to plan B, and they just 00:08:23.519 --> 00:08:26.300 begin to engage with Jesus in front of a crowd 00:08:26.300 --> 00:08:28.759 of mixed believers, some who believed and some 00:08:28.759 --> 00:08:32.320 didn't. And this turns into a conversation slash 00:08:32.320 --> 00:08:34.379 confrontation. Did you ever have one of those? 00:08:34.580 --> 00:08:37.519 Did you ever have a conversation slash confrontation? 00:08:37.960 --> 00:08:39.820 That's kind of what this turns into with the 00:08:39.820 --> 00:08:42.960 Pharisees and the Jews. And Jesus begins to have 00:08:42.960 --> 00:08:45.679 this discussion with them about who's your daddy? 00:08:46.139 --> 00:08:48.620 Who's your daddy? Who's your spiritual father? 00:08:48.940 --> 00:08:52.440 John 8 31 says this, then Jesus said to those 00:08:52.440 --> 00:08:55.519 Jews who believed him, if you abide in my word 00:08:55.519 --> 00:08:58.639 and you are my disciples indeed, and you shall 00:08:58.639 --> 00:09:00.720 know the truth and the truth shall make you free. 00:09:01.240 --> 00:09:03.679 They answered him, we are Abraham's descendants 00:09:03.679 --> 00:09:07.360 and have never been in bondage to anyone. How 00:09:07.360 --> 00:09:10.240 can you say you will be made free? Jesus answered 00:09:10.240 --> 00:09:12.840 them, Moses, surely I say to you, whoever commits 00:09:12.840 --> 00:09:15.940 sin is a slave to sin. Now I can stop and preach 00:09:15.940 --> 00:09:17.259 there for a while. Actually, I can preach the 00:09:17.259 --> 00:09:18.879 rest of the morning, but that's not where we're 00:09:18.879 --> 00:09:21.539 going this morning. And a slave does not abide 00:09:21.539 --> 00:09:23.840 in the house forever, but his son abides forever. 00:09:24.259 --> 00:09:26.440 Therefore, if a son makes you free, you shall 00:09:26.440 --> 00:09:29.360 be free indeed. Then verse 37 starts to get into 00:09:29.360 --> 00:09:32.100 a family talk. I know that you are Abraham's 00:09:32.100 --> 00:09:34.399 descendants, but you seek to kill me because 00:09:34.399 --> 00:09:38.059 my word has no place in you. I speak what I have 00:09:38.059 --> 00:09:40.279 seen with my father. This is Jesus speaking, 00:09:40.440 --> 00:09:43.659 the family talk, right? And you do what you have 00:09:43.659 --> 00:09:46.279 seen with your father. They answered and said 00:09:46.279 --> 00:09:49.820 to him, Abraham's our father. Jesus said to them, 00:09:49.879 --> 00:09:52.580 if you were Abraham's children, you would do 00:09:52.580 --> 00:09:55.570 the works of Abraham. But now you seek to kill 00:09:55.570 --> 00:09:58.309 me, a man who has told you the truth, which I 00:09:58.309 --> 00:10:01.529 heard from God. Abraham did not do this. You 00:10:01.529 --> 00:10:04.570 do the deeds of your father. They said to him, 00:10:04.610 --> 00:10:07.009 we were not born of fornication. We have one 00:10:07.009 --> 00:10:11.110 father, God. And Jesus said to them, if God were 00:10:11.110 --> 00:10:13.370 your father, you would love me. For I proceeded 00:10:13.370 --> 00:10:16.509 forth and came from God. Nor have I come of myself, 00:10:16.809 --> 00:10:19.509 but he sent me. Why do you not understand my 00:10:19.509 --> 00:10:22.409 speech? Because you are not able to listen to 00:10:22.409 --> 00:10:26.960 my word. you are of your father, the devil. The 00:10:26.960 --> 00:10:29.799 desires of your father, you want to do. He was 00:10:29.799 --> 00:10:31.820 a murderer from the beginning and does not stand 00:10:31.820 --> 00:10:34.519 in truth because there is no truth in him. When 00:10:34.519 --> 00:10:36.940 he speaks, he's talking about the devil. He speaks 00:10:36.940 --> 00:10:39.080 from his own resources. He speaks a lie, right? 00:10:39.200 --> 00:10:41.779 He speaks from his own resources for he is a 00:10:41.779 --> 00:10:44.539 liar and the father of it. But because I tell 00:10:44.539 --> 00:10:46.860 you the truth, you do not believe me. Which of 00:10:46.860 --> 00:10:49.519 you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, 00:10:49.679 --> 00:10:52.750 why do you not believe me? he who is of God hears 00:10:52.750 --> 00:10:56.169 God, therefore you do not hear because you are 00:10:56.169 --> 00:10:59.590 not of God. Then the Jews answered and said to 00:10:59.590 --> 00:11:02.409 him, do we not say rightly that you are a Samaritan 00:11:02.409 --> 00:11:07.690 and have a demon? Jesus confronts this crowd 00:11:07.690 --> 00:11:10.970 of remaining Jews and Pharisees and he shifts 00:11:10.970 --> 00:11:14.389 the conversation to family talk. He says, let's 00:11:14.389 --> 00:11:17.210 talk about spiritual fathers because spiritual 00:11:17.210 --> 00:11:20.919 fathers matter. Let's talk about spiritual fathers 00:11:20.919 --> 00:11:23.779 because spiritual fathers set the agenda of life. 00:11:24.000 --> 00:11:26.080 Let's talk about spiritual fathers because it 00:11:26.080 --> 00:11:28.019 has everything to do with how you're thinking, 00:11:28.159 --> 00:11:30.379 how you're acting, the motives that are behind 00:11:30.379 --> 00:11:33.500 what you're doing right now, your spiritual DNA. 00:11:33.960 --> 00:11:37.399 Let's talk about fathers because I clearly see, 00:11:37.500 --> 00:11:40.299 this is Jesus saying, I clearly see that you 00:11:40.299 --> 00:11:44.080 have a different father than I do. I don't think they were 00:11:55.029 --> 00:11:56.649 fully getting it because Jesus was talking about 00:11:56.649 --> 00:11:58.730 spiritual fathers and the crowd, they kept going 00:11:58.730 --> 00:12:00.990 back and talking about their physical roots in 00:12:00.990 --> 00:12:03.669 Abraham, Father Abraham. Abraham was the first 00:12:03.669 --> 00:12:06.649 man that God chose to start the nation of Israel. 00:12:06.769 --> 00:12:09.110 So they're looking back to a forefather. They're 00:12:09.110 --> 00:12:10.909 talking about their history. They're talking 00:12:10.909 --> 00:12:12.429 about, you know, things that they're leaning 00:12:12.429 --> 00:12:14.950 on. And Jesus begins to set them straight on 00:12:14.950 --> 00:12:17.909 how important it is to know who your spiritual 00:12:17.909 --> 00:12:22.539 father really is. Jesus said to some of these, 00:12:22.700 --> 00:12:25.899 the devil is your father. Now, how many know 00:12:25.899 --> 00:12:27.759 if you want to get a conversation stirred up 00:12:27.759 --> 00:12:30.899 in a hurry, that's a great way to do it? If you 00:12:30.899 --> 00:12:33.500 don't believe me, go try it this afternoon. Walk 00:12:33.500 --> 00:12:35.419 up to somebody and say, you know, I think your 00:12:35.419 --> 00:12:38.730 father's the devil. You're going to engage in 00:12:38.730 --> 00:12:40.809 a conversation. I'm quite certain of it, right? 00:12:41.649 --> 00:12:43.970 And that's what Jesus did. He just confronted 00:12:43.970 --> 00:12:47.029 him straight up. He just called him out. Jesus 00:12:47.029 --> 00:12:50.129 never backed down from a fight or an argument 00:12:50.129 --> 00:12:53.029 or a conversation in public or in private in 00:12:53.029 --> 00:12:55.210 any kind of way. And he was not afraid to call 00:12:55.210 --> 00:12:57.470 these Pharisees out. And he just said, you're 00:12:57.470 --> 00:12:59.350 missing it. You don't understand who your father 00:12:59.350 --> 00:13:02.110 is. And I'm here to tell you this morning, and 00:13:02.110 --> 00:13:04.230 I don't want to get lost in the confrontation 00:13:04.230 --> 00:13:06.570 or the conversation because there's a spiritual 00:13:06.570 --> 00:13:09.340 principle. here. It's my spiritual father and 00:13:09.340 --> 00:13:12.960 not my earthly father that gives me my true identity 00:13:12.960 --> 00:13:18.360 in life. It's true. It's my spiritual father 00:13:18.360 --> 00:13:20.720 and not my earthly father that gives me my true 00:13:20.720 --> 00:13:25.480 identity in life. It's my spiritual father who 00:13:25.480 --> 00:13:28.139 can set the course for my life. It's my spiritual 00:13:28.139 --> 00:13:31.200 father who can determine my eternal identity, 00:13:31.440 --> 00:13:35.720 right? He codes my spiritual DNA. He passes down 00:13:35.720 --> 00:13:39.100 his traits to me, and they come down, just much 00:13:39.100 --> 00:13:41.519 like it happens in a physical sense. It determines 00:13:41.519 --> 00:13:44.159 so much of my present. It changes so much of 00:13:44.159 --> 00:13:47.950 my past, and it absolutely sets my future. It's 00:13:47.950 --> 00:13:51.309 my spiritual father. And it might be your physical 00:13:51.309 --> 00:13:54.470 father's DNA that causes you to look like you 00:13:54.470 --> 00:13:56.570 look, maybe to sound like you look, or to wear 00:13:56.570 --> 00:13:59.169 the size of clothes that you wear. But this is 00:13:59.169 --> 00:14:01.690 the good news. It is your spiritual father that 00:14:01.690 --> 00:14:07.409 sets your spiritual DNA forever. They were experts in 00:23:02.240 --> 00:23:05.019 the law of God, but their default was saying 00:23:05.019 --> 00:23:07.940 something completely different. And Jesus saw 00:23:07.940 --> 00:23:10.920 it. Who's your daddy? Worship team, if you'd 00:23:10.920 --> 00:23:16.359 come. If you'd come. One of my favorite parables 00:23:16.359 --> 00:23:18.579 in the Bible is the parable of the seed and the 00:23:18.579 --> 00:23:22.319 sower. And this parable is about a farmer who 00:23:22.319 --> 00:23:24.660 goes out and throws seed into different kind 00:23:24.660 --> 00:23:28.839 of soil conditions. And there's a lot of revelation 00:23:28.839 --> 00:23:30.980 in this particular passage, and we're not going 00:23:30.980 --> 00:23:32.500 to have time to break it all down. But I want 00:23:32.500 --> 00:23:36.259 to read you quickly this parable, and then I 00:23:36.259 --> 00:23:37.680 want to give you an explanation of just one part 00:23:37.680 --> 00:23:45.720 of it. It says this, A sower went out to sow, 00:23:45.839 --> 00:23:48.000 and he sowed some seeds, and they fell by the 00:23:48.000 --> 00:23:50.079 wayside. That's the path. That's the hard ground. 00:23:50.200 --> 00:23:53.039 And the birds came and devoured them. Some fell 00:23:53.039 --> 00:23:55.220 on the seeds. Some of the seeds fell on stony 00:23:55.220 --> 00:23:57.339 places where they did not have much earth, and 00:23:57.339 --> 00:23:59.079 they immediately sprang up because they had no 00:23:59.079 --> 00:24:01.980 depth of earth. But when the sun was up and they 00:24:01.980 --> 00:24:05.539 were scorched, and because they had no root, 00:24:05.619 --> 00:24:07.980 they withered away. He's talking about 00:24:24.579 --> 00:24:27.660 farmers and seeds going out planting seed on 00:24:27.660 --> 00:24:29.180 all these different soil conditions. What are 00:24:29.180 --> 00:24:31.380 you talking about? And they went to Jesus and 00:24:31.380 --> 00:24:33.160 Jesus said, well, let me explain what I'm talking 00:24:33.160 --> 00:24:34.839 about. And I'm going to give you just part of 00:24:34.839 --> 00:24:37.740 that explanation. In Matthew 13, 18, he says, 00:24:37.859 --> 00:24:40.079 therefore, hear the parable of the sower. When 00:24:40.079 --> 00:24:41.940 anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does 00:24:41.940 --> 00:24:44.160 not understand it, then the wicked one comes 00:24:44.160 --> 00:24:46.180 and snatches away what was sown in his heart. 00:24:46.460 --> 00:24:49.380 He who receives seed by the wayside. So he was, 00:24:49.440 --> 00:24:51.940 Jesus was telling him, listen, if the seed or 00:24:51.940 --> 00:24:53.900 the word, right, of the kingdom falls on hard 00:24:53.900 --> 00:24:56.039 ground and that's your heart, that's your condition, 00:24:56.279 --> 00:24:58.460 the enemy is just going to come and take it and 00:24:58.460 --> 00:24:59.900 he's going to run with it. And he has no root in himself, but only 00:25:15.140 --> 00:25:17.900 endures for a while. For when tribulation or 00:25:17.900 --> 00:25:21.339 persecution arises because of the word, immediately 00:25:21.339 --> 00:25:25.980 he stumbles. Jesus says the seed that falls on 00:25:25.980 --> 00:25:29.660 the stony ground is somebody where the seed falls 00:25:29.660 --> 00:25:32.299 into their heart and it grows up very quickly, 00:25:32.339 --> 00:25:35.549 but they have no root in themselves. This is 00:25:35.549 --> 00:25:37.569 the person who hears the word of the kingdom 00:25:37.569 --> 00:25:39.990 and it sounds good to them. They're like, man, 00:25:40.049 --> 00:25:42.309 this is good stuff, right?
