But first, 00:01:32.299 --> 00:01:35.480 a little bit about Kelly. Kelly Dove is just 00:01:35.480 --> 00:01:39.680 20 years old in 1982. Kelly is a young wife and 00:01:39.680 --> 00:01:41.439 a mother to a four -year -old daughter and a 00:01:41.439 --> 00:01:44.980 sister, one of four sisters who all work together 00:01:44.980 --> 00:01:48.299 at the same place. Kelly was married to Dale 00:01:48.299 --> 00:01:51.340 Dove, who was 25 years old and worked in construction, 00:01:51.500 --> 00:01:54.799 and together they were building a life in Harrisonburg. 00:01:55.400 --> 00:01:58.819 Kelly worked at the Imperial Gas Station located 00:01:58.819 --> 00:02:03.400 at 2141 South Main Street. And this job was very 00:02:03.400 --> 00:02:06.599 familiar to her, as I previously mentioned. Her 00:02:06.599 --> 00:02:09.379 other sisters worked there too, so it was a comfortable 00:02:09.379 --> 00:02:13.580 place. Night shifts were common for her. And 00:02:13.580 --> 00:02:16.379 like many women working alone on the overnight 00:02:16.379 --> 00:02:19.639 shifts in the early 1980s, Kelly was used to 00:02:19.639 --> 00:02:22.699 some uncomfortable situations, unwanted attention 00:02:22.699 --> 00:02:26.819 or obscene phone calls. According to her sisters, 00:02:27.000 --> 00:02:29.139 these were common occurrences at the gas station. 00:02:29.840 --> 00:02:33.400 Kelly's 21st birthday was just weeks away. On Thursday night, Kelly reported to work 00:02:46.479 --> 00:02:49.080 for the third shift at the Imperial Gas Station. 00:02:49.840 --> 00:02:52.639 Her husband, Dale, dropped her off around 10 00:02:52.639 --> 00:02:54.879 o 'clock at night and stayed with her for about 00:02:54.879 --> 00:02:58.120 an hour before leaving. He was there just hanging 00:02:58.120 --> 00:03:01.300 out with her and chatting. According to him, 00:03:01.319 --> 00:03:04.300 nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Police say that 00:03:21.289 --> 00:03:24.030 they're able to account for Kelly's night, minute 00:03:24.030 --> 00:03:27.949 for minute, up until about 2 .15 a .m. What we 00:03:27.949 --> 00:03:32.090 do know is at 2 .27 a .m., Kelly picked up the 00:03:32.090 --> 00:03:34.689 phone and called the Harrisonburg Police Department. 00:03:35.090 --> 00:03:38.150 And police have actually released this 911 call, 00:03:38.310 --> 00:03:42.800 so we're going to play it here. Um, I'm working 00:03:42.800 --> 00:03:44.759 the third shift at the Imperial Gas Station. 00:03:45.699 --> 00:03:49.020 I just had an obscene phone call. And this guy 00:03:49.020 --> 00:03:53.860 came in earlier, and he was kind of dressed improperly, 00:03:53.860 --> 00:03:55.740 but I kind of ignored him. I think it was that 00:03:55.740 --> 00:03:58.099 guy, because he just drove through the parking 00:03:58.099 --> 00:04:01.539 lot a few seconds before I got the call. Could, 00:04:01.639 --> 00:04:03.599 you know, you have somebody kind of keep an eye 00:04:03.599 --> 00:04:07.719 out on me? Okay, this is on... Main Street. South 00:04:07.719 --> 00:04:20.000 Main? Uh -huh. So as you guys heard in this 911 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:24.459 call, Kelly doesn't sound panicked in the 911 00:04:24.459 --> 00:04:27.800 call. It's pretty matter -of -fact and solid, 00:04:27.959 --> 00:04:30.879 but she is asking for someone to keep an eye 00:04:30.879 --> 00:04:36.459 out on her. She's cautious, but calm. But just 00:04:36.459 --> 00:04:40.040 two minutes later, at 2 .29 a .m., Kelly calls 00:04:40.040 --> 00:04:44.860 911 again. This time, her voice is faster, more 00:04:44.860 --> 00:04:48.079 urgent, and the tape skips, according to those 00:04:48.079 --> 00:04:51.240 that have heard it. She told the dispatcher that 00:04:51.240 --> 00:04:54.339 the man was back in the parking lot. When the 00:04:54.339 --> 00:04:56.759 dispatcher asked what kind of car he was driving, 00:04:56.939 --> 00:04:59.639 Kelly answered, quote, a silver -colored Ford. 00:05:00.120 --> 00:05:02.939 The dispatcher said officers would be notified. 00:05:03.139 --> 00:05:06.379 Kelly thanked them and hung up. According to 00:05:06.379 --> 00:05:08.519 Kelly's sister, Rose, who has listened to the 00:05:08.519 --> 00:05:12.220 second 911 phone call, she says that you can 00:05:12.220 --> 00:05:15.600 hear a shuffle and then the phone abruptly snaps 00:05:15.600 --> 00:05:20.220 at the end. This 911 call is the last confirmed 00:05:20.220 --> 00:05:23.639 contact anyone has with Kelly Dove. However, 00:05:23.860 --> 00:05:27.939 police arrive just minutes later. Her last 911 00:05:27.939 --> 00:05:31.439 call was at 229. And according to police reports, 00:05:31.740 --> 00:05:34.939 they pull up to the gas station at 2 .31 a .m., 00:05:34.939 --> 00:05:38.540 so minutes later. However, Kelly is nowhere to 00:05:38.540 --> 00:05:41.740 be found. Inside the store, everything looked 00:05:41.740 --> 00:05:45.160 almost untouched. There were no signs of robbery. 00:05:45.480 --> 00:05:48.439 In some reports, it's said that money was left 00:05:48.439 --> 00:05:51.259 on the counter and all the cash remained in the 00:05:51.259 --> 00:05:54.079 cash register. The keys to the safe was still 00:05:54.079 --> 00:05:56.920 in the office, and there were no signs of struggle 00:05:56.920 --> 00:05:59.889 anywhere. Kelly's purse was left behind along 00:05:59.889 --> 00:06:02.870 with her cigarettes and money. Really, the only thing missing from 00:06:37.750 --> 00:06:43.149 the gas station was Kelly. That night, as Dale 00:06:43.149 --> 00:06:45.829 learned that his wife was missing, he spent the 00:06:45.829 --> 00:06:48.550 entire evening just riding around the roads looking 00:06:48.550 --> 00:06:51.949 for any sign of Kelly. He said, quote, I know 00:06:51.949 --> 00:06:54.110 it's a wild goose chase, but it's better than 00:06:54.110 --> 00:06:58.319 just sitting around. The next day, Saturday, 00:06:58.480 --> 00:07:01.920 June 19, 1982, so Kelly has been missing for 00:07:01.920 --> 00:07:04.699 one day, police announced that they were looking 00:07:04.699 --> 00:07:07.720 for a man seen at another convenience store about 00:07:07.720 --> 00:07:11.300 30 minutes before Kelly vanished. The man was 00:07:11.300 --> 00:07:15.259 described as around 25 years old, about 5 '10", 00:07:15.259 --> 00:07:18.259 weighing roughly 150 pounds, with shoulder -length 00:07:18.259 --> 00:07:21.240 blonde hair. He was driving a late -modeled, 00:07:21.279 --> 00:07:25.279 silver -colored car, possibly a Ford. Since Kelly 00:07:25.279 --> 00:07:28.040 had mentioned the silver Ford, this is why police 00:07:28.040 --> 00:07:31.540 think they're connected. But in addition, the 00:07:31.540 --> 00:07:34.420 clerk at the other store reported seeing a two 00:07:34.420 --> 00:07:37.279 -tone silver car driving slowly around 2 a .m., 00:07:37.279 --> 00:07:41.399 circling the area several times. The clerk told 00:07:41.399 --> 00:07:45.060 police that about two weeks earlier, a man driving 00:07:45.060 --> 00:07:47.819 a similar car had exposed himself to a woman 00:07:47.819 --> 00:07:50.850 working the night shift. Despite this description, 00:07:51.209 --> 00:07:53.550 police don't really get any solid leads here, 00:07:53.649 --> 00:07:56.649 but they do think that these two events are connected. 00:07:57.569 --> 00:08:02.050 On Wednesday, June 23rd, so it's been five days 00:08:02.050 --> 00:08:04.990 since Kelly vanished, and police admit that they 00:08:04.990 --> 00:08:08.490 have no solid leads. Kelly's sister Debbie spoke 00:08:08.490 --> 00:08:11.209 to the media, explaining that obscene phone calls 00:08:11.209 --> 00:08:13.750 and sexual harassment were common when women 00:08:13.750 --> 00:08:16.410 worked the night shift. She said, quote, we get 00:08:16.410 --> 00:08:20.069 those all the time. Kelly's family searched constantly, 00:08:20.350 --> 00:08:23.470 scanning parking lots, watching for silver cars, 00:08:23.730 --> 00:08:26.310 looking for any man who matched the description. 00:08:27.050 --> 00:08:31.149 However, no real solid leads or suspects pop 00:08:31.149 --> 00:08:34.490 up. Really, the only thing that anybody has at 00:08:34.490 --> 00:08:36.549 this moment is hope that they'll find Kelly. 00:08:37.370 --> 00:08:41.710 On Thursday, July 29th, so it's been 41 days 00:08:41.710 --> 00:08:44.509 that Kelly has been missing. With each day, police 00:08:44.509 --> 00:08:46.870 privately worried that Kelly would not be found 00:08:46.870 --> 00:08:50.350 alive. Her family, however, held on to hope that 00:08:50.350 --> 00:08:53.610 she would come home. Investigators believed that 00:08:53.610 --> 00:08:55.950 the abduction happened in seconds, considering 00:08:55.950 --> 00:08:58.850 how tight the timeline is between that last phone 00:08:58.850 --> 00:09:01.350 call and when police say they arrived at the 00:09:01.350 --> 00:09:04.490 scene. The phone Kelly had used to call police 00:09:04.490 --> 00:09:08.049 was just 10 feet from the front door. They theorized 00:09:08.049 --> 00:09:10.029 that a man pulled directly up to the entrance, 00:09:10.330 --> 00:09:14.230 got out, and forced Kelly into the car. and they 00:09:14.230 --> 00:09:17.429 believe the attacker was armed. Police say, quote, 00:09:17.629 --> 00:09:24.950 During the last month of investigation, investigators 00:09:24.950 --> 00:09:28.169 focused heavily on men with prior sex crime convictions. 00:09:28.629 --> 00:09:31.789 Given the obscene phone calls and the sexual 00:09:31.789 --> 00:09:34.110 harassment of the encounter, police believed 00:09:34.110 --> 00:09:37.570 that the crime could be sexually motivated. Police 00:09:37.570 --> 00:09:41.240 noted that since Kelly's disappearance, The gas 00:09:41.240 --> 00:09:44.059 station had only received one obscene phone call 00:09:44.059 --> 00:09:47.080 since she disappeared. Police say that they're 00:09:47.080 --> 00:09:50.580 scrutinizing every detail, going back over Kelly's 00:09:50.580 --> 00:09:53.940 911 calls, even questioning what Kelly could 00:09:53.940 --> 00:09:57.879 have seen. Quote, When Kelly Dove called, did 00:09:57.879 --> 00:10:00.639 she see a silver -colored Ford? Was it silver? 00:10:00.879 --> 00:10:04.279 Dark gray? She wore glasses, was looking through 00:10:04.279 --> 00:10:07.679 tinted glass into a light. So police are really 00:10:07.679 --> 00:10:10.169 questioning. everything about the statement, 00:10:10.230 --> 00:10:13.450 trying to find a lead. However, police are determined, 00:10:13.750 --> 00:10:15.850 quote, we're not about to throw the towel in. 00:10:16.389 --> 00:10:18.330 Sooner or later, we're going to get a break on 00:10:18.330 --> 00:10:23.970 it. However, months begin to go by. In January 00:10:23.970 --> 00:10:27.169 of 1983, so over six months now that Kelly has 00:10:27.169 --> 00:10:31.090 been missing, police acknowledge what her family 00:10:31.090 --> 00:10:34.309 has feared, that they believe Kelly is dead at 00:10:34.309 --> 00:10:38.460 this point. Investigators even theorize that 00:10:38.460 --> 00:10:40.700 they believe that she's buried within 50 miles 00:10:40.700 --> 00:10:42.940 of the gas station, but really don't have any 00:10:42.940 --> 00:10:47.399 proof to hang this on. The FBI has joined the 00:10:47.399 --> 00:10:50.980 case as advisors, but still there's real no breakthrough 00:10:50.980 --> 00:10:55.580 in the case. In 1989, so it's been seven years 00:10:55.580 --> 00:10:58.200 since Kelly vanished, and she's legally declared 00:10:58.200 --> 00:11:02.419 dead. And still... No leads in the case, no suspects 00:11:02.419 --> 00:11:05.139 are named, and the case continues to get colder 00:11:05.139 --> 00:11:10.120 and colder. In 1993, so it's been over 11 years 00:11:10.120 --> 00:11:13.320 at this point, and Kelly's family publicly criticized 00:11:13.320 --> 00:11:17.019 the original investigation. Her mother said she 00:11:17.019 --> 00:11:19.500 believed police bungled the case from the beginning. 00:11:20.179 --> 00:11:22.679 She claimed that on the night Kelly was taken, 00:11:22.820 --> 00:11:25.919 the gas station was never properly secured, that 00:11:25.919 --> 00:11:28.080 customers were still walking in and out thinking 00:11:28.080 --> 00:11:32.230 the place was open. She said that she was told fingerprints 00:11:41.149 --> 00:11:43.470 weren't taken because there would have been too 00:11:43.470 --> 00:11:51.950 many at the scene. She says, quote, That same 00:11:51.950 --> 00:11:56.090 year, in 1993, The newspaper article suggested 00:11:56.090 --> 00:11:59.250 a possible connection between Kelly's disappearance 00:11:59.250 --> 00:12:02.649 and the murder of Paula Jean Chandler and the 00:12:02.649 --> 00:12:05.570 abduction and murder of 12 -year -old Katie Warsky. 00:12:06.509 --> 00:12:09.409 All three crimes happened within weeks of each 00:12:09.409 --> 00:12:13.350 other. Kelly vanished June 18th, Paula vanished 00:12:13.350 --> 00:12:16.929 June 19th, and her body was found just days later. 00:12:17.330 --> 00:12:20.470 And then Katie Warsky went missing just under 00:12:20.470 --> 00:12:23.820 a month later on July 12th. The article named 00:12:23.820 --> 00:12:26.120 a man who had never been interviewed in Kelly's 00:12:26.120 --> 00:12:31.259 case, Glenn Barker. Barker had been convicted 00:12:31.259 --> 00:12:34.259 of the murder of Katie Worski, whose body has 00:12:34.259 --> 00:12:36.659 never been recovered, so he was tried without 00:12:36.659 --> 00:12:41.000 a body. But at the time in 1982, when Kelly vanished, 00:12:41.399 --> 00:12:45.620 Barker drove a silver to dark gray, both colors 00:12:45.620 --> 00:12:50.279 have been described, 1965 Ford Falcon. However, 00:12:50.440 --> 00:12:53.620 after Kelly's disappearance, he painted the car 00:12:53.620 --> 00:12:57.659 blue. Furthermore, Barker had previously been 00:12:57.659 --> 00:13:01.240 charged in 1981, so two years before Kelly's 00:13:01.240 --> 00:13:04.019 disappearance, with assaulting an 18 -year -old 00:13:04.019 --> 00:13:07.279 girl at knife point, so he has a history of violent 00:13:07.279 --> 00:13:11.399 crime against women. Police say in 1993 that 00:13:11.399 --> 00:13:13.919 Barker had never been interviewed by Harrisburg 00:13:13.919 --> 00:13:17.279 police regarding Kelly's disappearance, despite... 00:13:17.629 --> 00:13:20.409 him driving a similar car to what Kelly described 00:13:20.409 --> 00:13:23.870 and what the other gas station clerk said. And 00:13:23.870 --> 00:13:27.250 Barker fit the description of the man seen about 00:13:27.250 --> 00:13:29.570 30 minutes before Kelly vanished at the other 00:13:29.570 --> 00:13:33.090 convenience store. During March of 1993, Barker 00:13:33.090 --> 00:13:36.110 was arrested again during a traffic stop. Police 00:13:36.110 --> 00:13:39.509 found a pellet gun resembling a pistol in his 00:13:39.509 --> 00:13:42.990 car, which he wasn't allowed to have. And underneath 00:13:42.990 --> 00:13:45.370 his car seat, they found a pair of handcuffs. 00:13:46.960 --> 00:13:49.899 After the newspaper publishes this article that 00:13:49.899 --> 00:13:52.879 Barker could be connected to Kelly's disappearance, 00:13:53.399 --> 00:13:56.679 police announce that they're reopening the investigation 00:13:56.679 --> 00:13:58.899 and they intend to look into this connection. 00:13:59.679 --> 00:14:03.460 However, I couldn't find any updates, so I do 00:14:03.460 --> 00:14:06.960 assume that police had talked to Barker at that 00:14:06.960 --> 00:14:10.799 point in 1993 or shortly thereafter, but there's 00:14:10.799 --> 00:14:13.860 never any updates. or if police officially were 00:14:13.860 --> 00:14:16.860 able to rule him out of the investigation, or 00:14:16.860 --> 00:14:19.940 if he's still considered a suspect. However, 00:14:20.100 --> 00:14:23.700 whatever information that they learn in 1993 00:14:23.700 --> 00:14:27.700 or thereafter doesn't really seem to make any 00:14:27.700 --> 00:14:31.320 big commotion in the case. The case goes cold 00:14:31.320 --> 00:14:33.759 and really falls out of the media after that. 00:14:34.350 --> 00:14:38.049 The next big update comes in 2020 when police 00:14:38.049 --> 00:14:40.470 announce that they're reopening the investigation 00:14:40.470 --> 00:14:42.470 again. So they're going to look into Kelly's 00:14:42.470 --> 00:14:46.269 disappearance again. And over the next few years, 00:14:46.470 --> 00:14:50.429 there are some periodic updates. So in June of 00:14:50.429 --> 00:14:53.669 2022, investigators announced that they had narrowed 00:14:53.669 --> 00:14:56.610 down their suspect list from four people to just 00:14:56.610 --> 00:14:59.940 one. However, almost like in the same breath 00:14:59.940 --> 00:15:02.620 as saying they have this one suspect, they acknowledge 00:15:02.620 --> 00:15:05.539 the possibility that Kelly's case could be part 00:15:05.539 --> 00:15:07.559 of a larger pattern and they could be dealing 00:15:07.559 --> 00:15:11.179 with an outside serial killer. So it might not 00:15:11.179 --> 00:15:13.360 even be the suspect that they're looking at. 00:15:13.419 --> 00:15:16.299 So they're pretty vague and they don't name the 00:15:16.299 --> 00:15:20.179 suspect in the case. In 2023, Kelly's sister 00:15:20.179 --> 00:15:23.279 Elaine spoke about the weight of waiting. She 00:15:23.279 --> 00:15:26.200 says, quote, you have to have hope. There's nothing 00:15:26.200 --> 00:15:29.759 else you can do. Investigators say that the biggest 00:15:29.759 --> 00:15:34.159 challenge now is evidence, degraded DNA specifically. 00:15:35.179 --> 00:15:37.659 Police need to be careful with what evidence 00:15:37.659 --> 00:15:40.940 they do send away because it's been over 40 years 00:15:40.940 --> 00:15:43.500 since Kelly's disappearance. So a lot of the 00:15:43.500 --> 00:15:47.240 DNA could have just been destroyed over the years. 00:15:48.200 --> 00:15:50.940 just won't be a good sample. So that is a challenge 00:15:50.940 --> 00:15:53.299 that they're facing. But it does sound like there 00:15:53.299 --> 00:15:57.259 could be some DNA in this case, or at least potentially 00:15:57.259 --> 00:15:59.500 some things that could be tested for DNA, it 00:15:59.500 --> 00:16:04.379 sounds like. Police say in 2023 that they are 00:16:04.379 --> 00:16:07.200 closer than ever. And when they talk about this 00:16:07.200 --> 00:16:09.620 case, and they're still saying that there's just 00:16:09.620 --> 00:16:12.500 one suspect in the case, they still declined 00:16:12.500 --> 00:16:15.659 to name him in 2023, but they talk very confidently 00:16:15.659 --> 00:16:18.720 about the case. saying things along the line 00:16:18.720 --> 00:16:21.159 of what they know and what they're able to prove 00:16:21.159 --> 00:16:23.700 are two different things. So it sounds like police 00:16:23.700 --> 00:16:26.960 have a very strong theory of what happened and 00:16:26.960 --> 00:16:30.059 something that they believe is the truth, but 00:16:30.059 --> 00:16:31.940 they're not able to prove it at this point with 00:16:31.940 --> 00:16:33.580 evidence. So it looks like they're still missing 00:16:33.580 --> 00:16:36.799 something to really bring this case home.
