So just as a 00:01:09.930 --> 00:01:11.989 bit of a content warning at the top, this case 00:01:11.989 --> 00:01:16.049 does involve a young person. Today, we are talking 00:01:16.049 --> 00:01:18.890 about the cold case of Arthur James Williams 00:01:18.890 --> 00:01:23.250 Jr. And this happens in Las Vegas, Nevada in 00:01:23.250 --> 00:01:27.189 April of 1985. But first, a little bit about 00:01:27.189 --> 00:01:31.150 Arthur. In 1985, Arthur was just three years 00:01:31.150 --> 00:01:33.569 old and living in Las Vegas, Nevada with his 00:01:33.569 --> 00:01:37.629 family. He and his five -year -old sister, Anglia, 00:01:37.790 --> 00:01:40.769 were close and spent their days together. Their 00:01:40.769 --> 00:01:44.189 father, who was also named Arthur, worked as 00:01:44.189 --> 00:01:46.969 a porter at the Tropicana Hotel, and their mother, 00:01:47.129 --> 00:01:49.810 Annie, worked as a maid at the Las Vegas Hilton. 00:01:50.370 --> 00:01:53.670 Since father and son shared the same name, the 00:01:53.670 --> 00:01:57.790 nickname Junior quickly stuck with Arthur. Annie 00:01:57.790 --> 00:02:01.290 and Arthur Sr. were not together, but they were 00:02:01.290 --> 00:02:05.239 co -parenting well. Annie lived in the York apartments 00:02:05.239 --> 00:02:09.340 at 213 West New York Avenue in a neighborhood 00:02:09.340 --> 00:02:13.520 known as Naked City in Las Vegas, Nevada. Just 00:02:13.520 --> 00:02:16.860 two streets over on Philadelphia Avenue is where 00:02:16.860 --> 00:02:20.860 Arthur Sr. lived. So Jr. and his sister were 00:02:20.860 --> 00:02:22.879 comfortable in this neighborhood and spent a 00:02:22.879 --> 00:02:25.020 lot of time going back and forth between their 00:02:25.020 --> 00:02:28.919 parents' homes. The neighborhood is located just 00:02:28.919 --> 00:02:32.449 off of the famous Las Vegas Strip. In fact, their 00:02:32.449 --> 00:02:35.210 neighborhood is in the shadow of the Strat Hotel. 00:02:35.770 --> 00:02:39.069 Of course, that was not there in 1985, but today 00:02:39.069 --> 00:02:42.990 you can see the big Stratosphere Hotel right 00:02:42.990 --> 00:02:46.750 from both of their homes. While the area had 00:02:46.750 --> 00:02:49.430 a reputation of being rougher, neighbors pushed 00:02:49.430 --> 00:02:52.110 back on that image, insisting it wasn't fair 00:02:52.110 --> 00:02:54.409 and didn't reflect the people who lived there. 00:02:54.729 --> 00:02:58.509 For Arthur and Anglia, this was a familiar and 00:02:58.509 --> 00:03:01.490 comfortable neighborhood. Arthur was known for 00:03:01.490 --> 00:03:05.050 his smile. He was happy -go -lucky, smart for 00:03:05.050 --> 00:03:08.289 his age and strong. Remarkably strong for a three 00:03:08.289 --> 00:03:11.650 -year -old, his family would remark. He was also 00:03:11.650 --> 00:03:14.250 a child whose presence brought joy to the small 00:03:14.250 --> 00:03:17.530 circle around him. Neighbors knew him by the 00:03:17.530 --> 00:03:19.530 smile that just seemed to light up his face. 00:03:20.750 --> 00:03:26.189 And now a timeline of events. Monday, April 15th, 00:03:26.189 --> 00:03:31.139 1985. Just a little bit after 5 p .m., Annie 00:03:31.139 --> 00:03:34.139 is off of work at the Hilton and she picks up 00:03:34.139 --> 00:03:36.620 both of her children from their dad and stepmother's 00:03:36.620 --> 00:03:40.000 home on Philadelphia Avenue. Since she had just 00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:42.860 gotten off of work, her and the kids quickly 00:03:42.860 --> 00:03:44.819 swung by her apartment so that way she could 00:03:44.819 --> 00:03:47.120 change out of her clothes. Then they all jumped 00:03:47.120 --> 00:03:50.259 back in the car and headed over to KFC to pick 00:03:50.259 --> 00:03:52.840 up some dinner. After picking up the food, they 00:03:52.840 --> 00:03:55.680 head straight back to the apartment. Arthur and 00:03:55.680 --> 00:03:58.099 his sister said that they weren't hungry. They 00:03:58.099 --> 00:04:00.319 weren't ready to eat. They wanted to go outside 00:04:00.319 --> 00:04:04.000 and play. So Annie told them it was fine to go 00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:08.199 outside. It was just about 6 p .m., so it's still 00:04:08.199 --> 00:04:10.979 daylight at this point. When they first step 00:04:10.979 --> 00:04:14.300 out of their apartment and outside, Anglia notices 00:04:14.300 --> 00:04:18.120 a white man sitting on a low wall along the sidewalk 00:04:18.120 --> 00:04:21.959 of West New York Avenue. He was wearing a white 00:04:21.959 --> 00:04:25.699 button -down shirt that was unbuttoned and had 00:04:25.699 --> 00:04:28.139 the sleeves rolled up. He was also wearing blue 00:04:28.139 --> 00:04:32.660 jeans. He was about 5 '8", slender, around 130 00:04:32.660 --> 00:04:36.480 pounds, with blondish -brownish hair, possibly 00:04:36.480 --> 00:04:40.680 graying, and a slight mustache. She also mentioned 00:04:40.680 --> 00:04:43.399 specifically that he was wearing brown deck shoes, 00:04:43.759 --> 00:04:46.519 and he also spoke with some sort of European 00:04:46.519 --> 00:04:50.069 accent, but no specifics on what kind. The man 00:04:50.069 --> 00:04:52.949 was sitting on this like half wall outside of 00:04:52.949 --> 00:04:55.350 the apartment, and Anglia also sat on the wall 00:04:55.350 --> 00:04:58.430 but farther away from the man. And Arthur was 00:04:58.430 --> 00:05:00.889 just playing on the sidewalk a few feet in front 00:05:00.889 --> 00:05:05.029 of his sister. Suddenly, Anglia heard the man 00:05:05.029 --> 00:05:07.269 say something along the lines of, I'm going to 00:05:07.269 --> 00:05:10.509 kill you, I'm going to hurt you, to her little 00:05:10.509 --> 00:05:14.949 brother. Then, without hesitation, the man stood 00:05:14.949 --> 00:05:17.610 up, pulled out a folding knife from his pocket, 00:05:18.120 --> 00:05:21.399 and took a single step towards Arthur. Arthur 00:05:21.399 --> 00:05:23.779 was still playing on the ground near the curb 00:05:23.779 --> 00:05:27.279 when the man approached and swung once, stabbing 00:05:27.279 --> 00:05:30.100 him in the head just above the ear. And just 00:05:30.100 --> 00:05:33.939 as quickly, the man took off running. He was 00:05:33.939 --> 00:05:36.540 bolting down the alley off West New York Avenue, 00:05:36.680 --> 00:05:41.079 running south. In almost the same instance, Anglia 00:05:41.079 --> 00:05:43.500 took off running to her mother's apartment, screaming, 00:05:43.759 --> 00:05:47.420 and told her mom that Arthur had been hit. Annie 00:05:47.420 --> 00:05:49.439 emerged out of the apartment into a nightmare. 00:05:50.160 --> 00:05:52.839 She thought that Arthur had been hit by a car 00:05:52.839 --> 00:05:55.319 since Anglia had come in saying that he was 00:05:55.319 --> 00:05:57.420 hit, so she's looking in the middle of the road 00:05:57.420 --> 00:06:01.060 for her son but can't find him. It's then that 00:06:01.060 --> 00:06:04.379 Anglia points to Arthur, who's crumpled up next 00:06:04.379 --> 00:06:07.120 to the curb, and Annie scoops up her son and 00:06:07.120 --> 00:06:10.819 screams for help. A neighbor rushes out and begins 00:06:10.819 --> 00:06:15.750 doing CPR on the boy as 911 is called. It's reported 00:06:15.750 --> 00:06:18.990 that around 6 -11, so really 11 minutes after 00:06:18.990 --> 00:06:20.930 the kids had stepped outside, is when the first 00:06:20.930 --> 00:06:25.050 911 calls started coming in to police. Paramedics 00:06:25.050 --> 00:06:27.069 arrive, and they start rushing Arthur to the 00:06:27.069 --> 00:06:30.389 hospital. At this point, no one has been able 00:06:30.389 --> 00:06:33.470 to confirm that it was a stabbing. They don't 00:06:33.470 --> 00:06:35.389 know if he had been hit, if he had been struck 00:06:35.389 --> 00:06:38.129 with an object, but all they can really know 00:06:38.129 --> 00:06:40.509 for sure is that he's bleeding from his head. 00:06:41.579 --> 00:06:45.019 An officer left at the scene realizes that Anglia 00:06:45.019 --> 00:06:48.439 is the only witness to the murder. She tells 00:06:48.439 --> 00:06:51.759 police what she saw. The scene at the apartment 00:06:51.759 --> 00:06:54.420 is small. There is a little blood left at the 00:06:54.420 --> 00:06:57.339 ground from Arthur, but really it's contained, 00:06:57.480 --> 00:06:59.639 so police are able to secure the scene quickly. 00:07:00.399 --> 00:07:02.720 Paramedics rush Arthur to the hospital, where 00:07:02.720 --> 00:07:06.139 he's quickly moved into surgery. He's still alive 00:07:06.139 --> 00:07:09.899 at this point, but unresponsive. The next day, 00:07:10.269 --> 00:07:15.329 Thursday, April 16, 1985, about 17 hours after 00:07:15.329 --> 00:07:20.089 the attack, at around 10 .20 a .m., Arthur passes 00:07:20.089 --> 00:07:25.029 away at the hospital. His parents made the decision 00:07:25.029 --> 00:07:29.050 to donate his organs. His corneas, kidneys, and 00:07:29.050 --> 00:07:32.490 heart went on to save and help others. His father 00:07:32.490 --> 00:07:35.730 said, quote, My son's no longer with us, so I 00:07:35.730 --> 00:07:38.769 prefer to have another life continue. My son 00:07:38.769 --> 00:07:43.069 will live on in somebody else's body. Annie very 00:07:43.069 --> 00:07:45.709 quickly makes the decision that she cannot stay 00:07:45.709 --> 00:07:49.790 in that apartment any longer. She quickly returns 00:07:49.790 --> 00:07:53.750 to just grab some important things and then finds 00:07:53.750 --> 00:07:57.230 a new place to live very quickly. Word spread 00:07:57.230 --> 00:07:59.529 throughout the complex, sending fear through 00:07:59.529 --> 00:08:01.810 a community where children were usually running 00:08:01.810 --> 00:08:05.470 around and playing in the streets. Kids were 00:08:05.470 --> 00:08:08.730 still outside, but now... Every parent was hovering 00:08:08.730 --> 00:08:12.029 close by. One neighbor said, quote, we're watching 00:08:12.029 --> 00:08:14.930 everybody, even people we know. He might be coming 00:08:14.930 --> 00:08:17.209 back for someone else or just returning to see 00:08:17.209 --> 00:08:20.449 the cops. So everyone's on alert and everybody's 00:08:20.449 --> 00:08:23.589 suspicious of everyone. Another neighbor tells 00:08:23.589 --> 00:08:26.230 police that he had been outside moments before 00:08:26.230 --> 00:08:28.550 the attacks but had stepped back into his apartment 00:08:28.550 --> 00:08:32.509 when the attack was actually taking place. He 00:08:32.509 --> 00:08:35.429 says, quote, I wish I had stayed out there. I 00:08:35.429 --> 00:08:38.139 might have seen something. I wonder why he didn't 00:08:38.139 --> 00:08:40.820 hurt the girl. I guess the guy was nuts or planned 00:08:40.820 --> 00:08:43.779 to kill the boy all along. Tips began coming 00:08:43.779 --> 00:08:46.840 in as media coverage increased on the case. At 00:08:46.840 --> 00:08:49.720 the time, in 1985, this really hits the Las Vegas 00:08:49.720 --> 00:08:52.600 media. It's front page news for many, many days. 00:08:53.179 --> 00:08:55.559 Police are canvassing the area for witnesses 00:08:55.559 --> 00:08:58.559 and going door to door to get statements. They 00:08:58.559 --> 00:09:00.840 did talk to an apartment manager who said that 00:09:00.840 --> 00:09:04.039 about 15 minutes before the murder, Two Hispanic 00:09:04.039 --> 00:09:06.620 males had been sitting on the wall drinking beer, 00:09:06.779 --> 00:09:09.240 but the apartment manager had chased them off 00:09:09.240 --> 00:09:11.559 because they were littering their beer cans in 00:09:11.559 --> 00:09:14.700 the landscaping. The men had gone down the same 00:09:14.700 --> 00:09:17.340 alley that the murderer would run down minutes 00:09:17.340 --> 00:09:20.860 later. Police continue to question everybody, 00:09:20.919 --> 00:09:24.320 but it seems very quickly that the only person 00:09:24.320 --> 00:09:28.700 that saw the murder is Arthur's sister. On Wednesday, 00:09:28.820 --> 00:09:33.019 April 17th, 1985, so this is two days since the 00:09:33.019 --> 00:09:36.279 murder, police had no solid leads at this point 00:09:36.279 --> 00:09:39.279 and were pleading with the public for help. They 00:09:39.279 --> 00:09:43.179 hoped that the horror and randomness of the crime 00:09:43.179 --> 00:09:45.340 would push someone to come forward with what 00:09:45.340 --> 00:09:48.919 they know. Working with Anglia, detectives established 00:09:48.919 --> 00:09:52.419 the basic sequence. The man was sitting on the 00:09:52.419 --> 00:09:56.200 wall. He talked to the children. threatened to 00:09:56.200 --> 00:09:59.639 kill Arthur, and then pulled out the knife and 00:09:59.639 --> 00:10:02.940 stabbed him before running south. It all happened 00:10:02.940 --> 00:10:06.600 very, very quickly. Detectives work with her 00:10:06.600 --> 00:10:09.200 to create a composite sketch of the man. And 00:10:09.200 --> 00:10:12.340 initially, a $1 ,000 reward is offered, but quickly 00:10:12.340 --> 00:10:15.740 this grows and doubles as people donate due to 00:10:15.740 --> 00:10:18.779 the horror of the crime. One investigator called 00:10:18.779 --> 00:10:21.259 it, quote, the most senseless thing I've seen. 00:10:21.879 --> 00:10:24.789 The family was shattered. They couldn't stop 00:10:24.789 --> 00:10:28.889 thinking about Arthur's final moments. The family 00:10:28.889 --> 00:10:31.909 seemed sure that he likely smiled as the man 00:10:31.909 --> 00:10:34.610 approached him because that's just how he was. 00:10:34.610 --> 00:10:37.429 He smiled at everybody. His father said, quote, 00:10:37.590 --> 00:10:40.110 We don't know what happened. Now we're afraid 00:10:40.110 --> 00:10:43.549 for his sister. She was the only witness. There was always people out and about 00:11:02.309 --> 00:11:05.429 in this community, so his parents believe that 00:11:05.429 --> 00:11:09.350 somebody else should have seen something. Later 00:11:09.350 --> 00:11:11.789 that day, police announced that they were looking 00:11:11.789 --> 00:11:14.909 for another possible suspect, but it could be 00:11:14.909 --> 00:11:18.539 the same man. This man was seen shortly before 00:11:18.539 --> 00:11:22.179 the murder took place at about 545, so 15, 20 00:11:22.179 --> 00:11:25.519 minutes before the actual act. He matched the 00:11:25.519 --> 00:11:28.220 general description that Anglia had given. A 00:11:28.220 --> 00:11:32.840 white male, early 30s, around 5 '8", with graying 00:11:32.840 --> 00:11:36.480 brown blondish hair, combed over the ears and 00:11:36.480 --> 00:11:39.259 parted on the right. He was wearing a cotton 00:11:39.259 --> 00:11:41.580 white dress shirt with rolled up sleeves, light 00:11:41.580 --> 00:11:44.440 brown khaki pants, and old brown deck shoes. 00:11:45.259 --> 00:11:48.720 He spoke English with a European accent, so very 00:11:48.720 --> 00:11:50.759 similar to the same description that Anglia 00:11:50.759 --> 00:11:54.139 had given. A composite sketch was created from 00:11:54.139 --> 00:11:58.379 all of this and released to the media. On Thursday, 00:11:58.460 --> 00:12:01.379 April 18th, so this is three days after the murder, 00:12:01.559 --> 00:12:05.259 and police officially release the composite sketch 00:12:05.259 --> 00:12:08.259 based off of Anglia's description and the description 00:12:08.259 --> 00:12:11.460 of the man seen, you know, shortly before the 00:12:11.460 --> 00:12:14.899 crime took place. Hundreds of calls start pouring 00:12:14.899 --> 00:12:17.820 in, and police start chasing down every single 00:12:17.820 --> 00:12:21.059 one. People feel like they really recognize at 00:12:21.059 --> 00:12:25.100 least somebody from this composite sketch. The 00:12:25.100 --> 00:12:28.080 next day, on Friday, April 19th, so four days 00:12:28.080 --> 00:12:30.899 since the murder, a second sketch was released, 00:12:31.019 --> 00:12:33.740 though this one has fewer details in the face. 00:12:34.440 --> 00:12:37.620 We'll have them up on our Instagram, at coldandmissing, 00:12:37.620 --> 00:12:40.399 so you'll see the first one they release is very 00:12:40.399 --> 00:12:44.690 detailed. The second one... is less detailed. 00:12:46.129 --> 00:12:49.490 No explanation was given for why a second drawing 00:12:49.490 --> 00:12:53.149 was needed or released, but again, more and more 00:12:53.149 --> 00:12:55.929 tips come in for people who think that they know 00:12:55.929 --> 00:13:01.070 this man in the composite sketch. However, police 00:13:01.070 --> 00:13:05.169 run down all of the leads that come in one by 00:13:05.169 --> 00:13:08.649 one, and they rule each one out. On Tuesday, 00:13:08.769 --> 00:13:11.549 April 23rd, so it's been a week since the murder, 00:13:12.379 --> 00:13:16.200 Detectives still had no workable leads. Hundreds 00:13:16.200 --> 00:13:18.419 of calls had been logged, but none pointed them 00:13:18.419 --> 00:13:21.259 towards a suspect. Police had ran them down one 00:13:21.259 --> 00:13:23.759 by one, and according to them, none of them panned 00:13:23.759 --> 00:13:28.340 out. On Sunday, April 28, 1985, so it's been 00:13:28.340 --> 00:13:31.259 13 days now, and nearing the two -week mark, 00:13:31.539 --> 00:13:33.919 fear in the apartment complex remained high. 00:13:34.740 --> 00:13:38.460 A neighbor, Maria Lopez, said, I'm scared because 00:13:38.460 --> 00:13:40.860 they haven't caught the guy. The complex manager, Willie Daniels, 00:13:47.129 --> 00:13:50.470 said the atmosphere had changed entirely. Quote, 00:13:50.490 --> 00:13:53.169 everybody's leery at night. It's just really 00:13:53.169 --> 00:13:55.549 depressing. There used to always be children 00:13:55.549 --> 00:13:58.570 playing. It's just dead now. A couple of tenants 00:13:58.570 --> 00:14:02.789 have even purchased guns. Arthur's father voiced 00:14:02.789 --> 00:14:05.529 another concern, that there were likely witnesses 00:14:05.529 --> 00:14:08.549 who were too afraid to come forward. He says, 00:14:08.610 --> 00:14:21.090 quote, In response to this, in May of 1985, so 00:14:21.090 --> 00:14:24.929 a month after Arthur's murder, a couple in the 00:14:24.929 --> 00:14:27.990 neighborhood, Jim and Rosa Weber, bought a dedicated 00:14:27.990 --> 00:14:31.690 phone line and printed posters in Spanish, hoping 00:14:31.690 --> 00:14:34.600 that if someone did have information, but was 00:14:34.600 --> 00:14:37.120 undocumented, they would come forward to Rosa 00:14:37.120 --> 00:14:40.399 and Jim and tell them what they know. This was 00:14:40.399 --> 00:14:42.679 even signed off by the police, who thought it 00:14:42.679 --> 00:14:44.919 would be helpful as their case had stalled a 00:14:44.919 --> 00:14:48.059 month out. However, it doesn't seem that any 00:14:48.059 --> 00:14:51.879 meaningful tips ever came from this effort. And 00:14:51.879 --> 00:14:54.259 despite the sketches, the tips, the interviews, 00:14:54.379 --> 00:14:58.559 and the overall terror really gripping this area, 00:14:58.679 --> 00:15:02.019 this neighborhood, quickly the case goes cold. 00:15:03.600 --> 00:15:06.179 Over the years, investigators try to work on 00:15:06.179 --> 00:15:08.879 the case and they do some things here and there, 00:15:08.980 --> 00:15:11.860 but it remains firmly in the cold case category. 00:15:13.340 --> 00:15:18.700 In January of 2025, so just earlier this year, 00:15:18.860 --> 00:15:21.360 almost a complete year now that we're at the 00:15:21.360 --> 00:15:23.879 end of December or nearing the end of December, 00:15:24.019 --> 00:15:29.480 but just shy of 39 years, the Las Vegas police 00:15:29.480 --> 00:15:32.279 stepped up their effort around their cold cases. 00:15:33.200 --> 00:15:35.899 So they officially formed a cold case unit and 00:15:35.899 --> 00:15:38.360 had full -time detectives working specifically 00:15:38.360 --> 00:15:42.580 just on cold cases.
