And this takes place in November 00:01:33.420 --> 00:01:38.319 of 1978. in Speedway, Indiana. So as we mentioned 00:01:38.319 --> 00:01:40.780 at the top, we're continuing our two -part series 00:01:40.780 --> 00:01:43.799 on the Burger Chef murders. In that episode, we walked through 00:01:49.239 --> 00:01:53.200 the night of November 17, 1978, when four young 00:01:53.200 --> 00:01:55.500 employees disappeared from their shifts at the 00:01:55.500 --> 00:01:59.629 Burger Chef in Speedway, Indiana. When we left 00:01:59.629 --> 00:02:02.689 off last week, Jayne’s car had been found abandoned 00:02:02.689 --> 00:02:05.370 just about a block and a half from the Speedway 00:02:05.370 --> 00:02:08.710 Police Department. But at this point, while investigators 00:02:08.710 --> 00:02:11.289 became more worried about the four employees, 00:02:11.870 --> 00:02:14.590 the Burger Chef was still cleared to be cleaned 00:02:14.590 --> 00:02:17.969 and opened the next day. So we are on the evening 00:02:17.969 --> 00:02:23.099 of Sunday, November 19th, 1978. Jayne, Danny, 00:02:23.319 --> 00:02:27.159 Ruth and Mark had all been abducted Friday evening 00:02:27.159 --> 00:02:31.860 around midnight. So around 3 p .m. in the afternoon, 00:02:32.120 --> 00:02:35.219 a couple was walking in Johnson County, Indiana, 00:02:35.500 --> 00:02:38.800 which was about 15 to 20 -ish miles away from 00:02:38.800 --> 00:02:41.419 Speedway. They were walking through the woods 00:02:41.419 --> 00:02:44.460 when they make a gruesome discovery. They stumble 00:02:44.460 --> 00:02:48.020 upon the bodies of Danny and Ruth. They found 00:02:48.020 --> 00:02:51.430 them face down next to a gravel road. The couple 00:02:51.430 --> 00:02:53.610 retreated from the woods to get to a phone and 00:02:53.610 --> 00:02:56.729 call police. When police arrive, they quickly 00:02:56.729 --> 00:03:00.030 locate Danny and Ruth's body. Police say that 00:03:00.030 --> 00:03:02.729 they were shot execution style, but they also 00:03:02.729 --> 00:03:04.990 mentioned that both of them were shot several 00:03:04.990 --> 00:03:08.650 times in the head and neck. It was later determined 00:03:08.650 --> 00:03:10.469 during the autopsy that they were ultimately 00:03:10.469 --> 00:03:14.370 killed with a .38 caliber gun. Police begin searching 00:03:14.370 --> 00:03:17.550 the area, and about 50 yards away, they find 00:03:17.550 --> 00:03:20.990 the body of Jayne. Jayne had been stabbed twice 00:03:20.990 --> 00:03:24.849 in the chest. Later during the autopsy, the four 00:03:24.849 --> 00:03:26.930 and a half inch blade was found in her chest. 00:03:27.370 --> 00:03:30.770 The handle had been broken off. Mark's death had been debated 00:03:42.509 --> 00:03:45.159 over the years. For some time, it was thought 00:03:45.159 --> 00:03:47.340 that maybe Mark had been running from his captors 00:03:47.340 --> 00:03:50.500 when he hit a tree full force, which caused him 00:03:50.500 --> 00:03:53.780 to fall and choke on his own blood. Today, when 00:03:53.780 --> 00:03:55.860 the case is talked about, police say that he 00:03:55.860 --> 00:03:58.620 died from being beat, and the way that he collapsed, 00:03:58.840 --> 00:04:01.599 he had choked on his blood. All of them were 00:04:01.599 --> 00:04:04.039 still in their Burger Chef uniforms, except for 00:04:04.039 --> 00:04:07.340 Danny. He was still in his uniform pants, but 00:04:07.340 --> 00:04:10.759 he had on a different shirt and jacket. Investigators 00:04:10.759 --> 00:04:13.439 don't put too much into this. They think that 00:04:13.439 --> 00:04:15.580 Danny likely changed after the restaurant closed. 00:04:16.160 --> 00:04:18.699 Jayne had been found with her car keys in her 00:04:18.699 --> 00:04:22.500 pocket and cash on her. They tell police 00:05:42.269 --> 00:05:45.290 about the two men that had approached them. The 00:05:45.290 --> 00:05:47.509 day after the bodies are found, on Monday, November 00:05:47.509 --> 00:05:51.689 20th, Burger Chef announces a $25 ,000 reward 00:05:51.689 --> 00:05:55.350 for information. That same day as well, a maid 00:05:55.350 --> 00:05:57.689 calls the police because she was cleaning a Days 00:05:57.689 --> 00:06:00.949 Inn motel when she found a stack of Burger Chef 00:06:00.949 --> 00:06:04.730 time cards in the hallway. Police came and collected 00:06:04.730 --> 00:06:07.639 them. Ultimately, they decided they were not 00:06:07.639 --> 00:06:10.560 connected to the Burger Chef murders. Police draw 00:06:51.100 --> 00:06:53.720 the suspects based off of the description given 00:06:53.720 --> 00:06:56.939 under hypnosis by the two teens. When the teens 00:06:56.939 --> 00:06:59.040 look at the sketches, they say that the drawings 00:06:59.040 --> 00:07:02.879 are 90 to 95 % accurate to what they remember 00:07:02.879 --> 00:07:05.579 the men looking like. Ruth actually 00:07:41.759 --> 00:07:45.259 lived on Lupine Drive. One resident reported 00:07:45.259 --> 00:07:48.040 that she heard a scream as a van passed and that 00:07:48.040 --> 00:07:51.339 the car was full of kids. The two vehicles stopped 00:07:51.339 --> 00:07:53.699 and someone got out of the van and walked to 00:07:53.699 --> 00:07:56.519 the car. Other residents reported that the van 00:07:56.519 --> 00:08:00.040 and the car had slowed and stopped as well. The 00:08:00.040 --> 00:08:02.759 community is shook up by the murders. While being 00:08:02.759 --> 00:08:05.040 close to Indianapolis, Speedway typically does 00:08:05.040 --> 00:08:07.959 not have violent crime at this time. However, 00:08:08.160 --> 00:08:10.379 over the last few months, violent crimes had 00:08:10.379 --> 00:08:14.139 been on the rise. In July of that year, a 65 00:08:14.139 --> 00:08:16.560 -year -old woman had been shot, and in September, 00:08:16.839 --> 00:08:19.279 just a few months before the murders, there was 00:08:19.279 --> 00:08:21.480 a series of eight bombs that went off in the 00:08:21.480 --> 00:08:24.459 span of a week. It's determined later that the 00:08:24.459 --> 00:08:26.779 murder and the bombings were related to one another, 00:08:26.959 --> 00:08:29.600 and a man was arrested and charged in both of 00:08:29.600 --> 00:08:33.039 those cases. Just days after the murder, the 00:08:33.039 --> 00:08:36.419 funerals for all four young people happen. Hundreds 00:08:36.419 --> 00:08:38.919 turn out to pay their respects and to mourn the 00:08:38.919 --> 00:08:42.879 loss of four incredible young folks. After Ruth's 00:08:42.879 --> 00:08:45.659 funeral, her dad receives a taunting sympathy 00:08:45.659 --> 00:08:49.320 card from an anonymous person. Also, the night 00:08:49.320 --> 00:08:51.620 of her funeral, someone would ring his doorbell 00:08:51.620 --> 00:08:55.279 and when he answered, no one was there. Police described one of the men as a 00:09:25.059 --> 00:09:28.519 white male, around 35 years old, around 5 '9", 00:09:28.519 --> 00:09:31.500 with a heavy build and medium complexion, weighing 00:09:31.500 --> 00:09:34.740 about 200 pounds. He had reddish -brown curly 00:09:34.740 --> 00:09:37.820 hair down to his neck, parted in the middle, 00:09:37.879 --> 00:09:40.759 and a full beard. The second man was described 00:09:40.759 --> 00:09:44.179 as white, about 30 years old, and 6 '2", which 00:09:44.179 --> 00:09:46.120 was taller than what was originally reported. 00:09:47.139 --> 00:09:50.019 He had a slender build and a lighter complexion. 00:09:50.600 --> 00:09:53.279 He had black hair parted on the left, combed 00:09:53.279 --> 00:09:55.919 across to the right, and was clean -shaven, though 00:09:55.919 --> 00:09:59.159 he did have stubble coming through. These descriptions 00:09:59.159 --> 00:10:02.320 came directly from the teenage couple who had 00:10:02.320 --> 00:10:04.700 been put under hypnosis. These were the descriptions 00:10:04.700 --> 00:10:07.539 that they gave. That next day, Saturday, November 00:10:07.539 --> 00:10:11.000 25th, police returned to the wooded area in Johnson 00:10:11.000 --> 00:10:13.820 County where the bodies had been found. They 00:10:13.820 --> 00:10:15.700 combed through the woods again, searching for 00:10:15.700 --> 00:10:17.419 anything that might have been missed in the initial 00:10:17.419 --> 00:10:20.600 sweep. Detectives noted that the gravel road 00:10:20.600 --> 00:10:22.860 leading to the crime scene was not well known 00:10:22.860 --> 00:10:25.639 to outsiders and theorized that at least one 00:10:25.639 --> 00:10:28.039 of the killers may have lived in or been familiar 00:10:28.039 --> 00:10:31.879 with the area. Speedway detectives traveled to 00:10:44.340 --> 00:10:47.750 Ohio to interview him. The man passed a lie detector 00:10:47.750 --> 00:10:51.029 test and provided detailed knowledge about Indianapolis 00:10:51.029 --> 00:10:54.549 crimes and the Burger Chef murders, but investigators 00:10:54.549 --> 00:10:56.950 soon realized he only knew details that had already 00:10:56.950 --> 00:10:59.990 been reported in the newspaper. He pointed the 00:10:59.990 --> 00:11:03.309 finger at his jailhouse roommate, naming a man 00:11:03.309 --> 00:11:05.769 who had once lived in Indianapolis but had since 00:11:05.769 --> 00:11:08.950 moved to Cincinnati. This suspect was placed 00:11:08.950 --> 00:11:11.570 under surveillance, but his identity was never 00:11:11.570 --> 00:11:15.070 publicly released. Ultimately, it appears that 00:11:15.070 --> 00:11:18.490 he was ruled out. The local paper in Indianapolis 00:11:18.490 --> 00:11:21.450 was also offering an opportunity to submit tips 00:11:21.450 --> 00:11:24.450 anonymously but still have a chance at the reward 00:11:24.450 --> 00:11:27.750 money. They were instructed to write the tip 00:11:27.750 --> 00:11:30.769 on a piece of paper and then rip the bottom half 00:11:30.769 --> 00:11:33.350 of the paper in a unique way, whatever that meant 00:11:33.350 --> 00:11:36.789 to that person. On the tip that they send to 00:11:36.789 --> 00:11:38.990 the newspaper, they should also include a six 00:11:38.990 --> 00:11:41.509 -digit code that they wrote on the bottom half 00:11:41.509 --> 00:11:44.289 that was ripped off as well. The person submitting 00:11:44.289 --> 00:11:46.490 the tip would keep the bottom half, and then 00:11:46.490 --> 00:11:49.409 they would mail in their tip. If there was a 00:11:49.409 --> 00:11:52.929 tip that ultimately led to the arrest and therefore 00:11:52.929 --> 00:11:55.769 was entitled to reward money, the person who 00:11:55.769 --> 00:11:57.809 submitted the tip could come forward with the 00:11:57.809 --> 00:12:00.490 bottom half of the piece of paper, like as if 00:12:00.490 --> 00:12:04.480 it were a receipt. One letter was sent that police 00:12:04.480 --> 00:12:08.179 were particularly interested in. Investigators 00:12:08.179 --> 00:12:11.240 took the letter seriously. While it didn't provide 00:12:11.240 --> 00:12:13.720 exact details, it suggested knowledge of the 00:12:13.720 --> 00:12:16.379 crime and a possible method of operation during 00:12:16.379 --> 00:12:19.919 the robbery. Police made it clear in the newspaper 00:12:19.919 --> 00:12:21.940 that they wanted to talk to the writer of the 00:12:21.940 --> 00:12:24.960 letter. A few days later on Monday, December 00:12:24.960 --> 00:12:27.980 4th, so it's been just over two weeks since the 00:12:27.980 --> 00:12:30.860 murder, A man was leaving a bar on Indianapolis' 00:12:31.080 --> 00:12:35.240 north side and reported being abducted. He says 00:12:35.240 --> 00:12:37.500 that as he entered his car, a voice from the 00:12:37.500 --> 00:12:40.580 backseat told him, don't look back. The man was 00:12:40.580 --> 00:12:43.460 forced to drive to a park and then to his apartment, 00:12:43.799 --> 00:12:46.299 where the assailant stole his roommate's gun 00:12:46.299 --> 00:12:49.320 and several personal items before leaving with 00:12:49.320 --> 00:12:52.600 the man's car. Before fleeing, the kidnapper 00:12:52.600 --> 00:12:54.679 claimed he had been involved in the Burger Chef 00:12:54.679 --> 00:12:57.159 murders and would not hesitate to kill again. 00:12:58.420 --> 00:13:01.000 Approaching three weeks on Friday, December 8th, 00:13:01.019 --> 00:13:03.480 investigators admitted publicly that the case 00:13:03.480 --> 00:13:06.740 was starting to stall. The tip line was beginning 00:13:06.740 --> 00:13:10.639 to go quiet. And on Sunday, November 10th, police 00:13:10.639 --> 00:13:13.799 voiced one of their biggest questions. Why kill 00:13:13.799 --> 00:13:18.519 four teenagers for just over $500? Why take them 00:13:18.519 --> 00:13:21.519 to the woods at all? Why take them to woods where 00:13:21.519 --> 00:13:24.440 homes were within shouting distance? Nothing 00:13:24.440 --> 00:13:26.220 about the murder seemed to fit with a simple 00:13:26.220 --> 00:13:29.700 robbery. On Tuesday, December 12th, it's approaching 00:13:29.700 --> 00:13:32.820 a month since the murders, police followed up 00:13:32.820 --> 00:13:35.159 on a strange report of a man who resembled one 00:13:35.159 --> 00:13:38.039 of the composite sketches. He had stayed at a 00:13:38.039 --> 00:13:41.059 motel but skipped out on the bill, and he also 00:13:41.059 --> 00:13:44.100 told the staff that he was both a detective on 00:13:44.100 --> 00:13:47.480 the case of the Burger Chef murders and an uncle 00:13:47.480 --> 00:13:50.519 of one of the victims. It's unclear if they were 00:13:50.519 --> 00:13:54.100 ever able to locate this man. On Friday, December 00:13:54.100 --> 00:13:58.049 15th, Police received another letter from the 00:13:58.049 --> 00:14:00.409 original anonymous letter writer who they wanted 00:14:00.409 --> 00:14:03.350 to speak to. He claimed that there were three 00:14:03.350 --> 00:14:06.590 people involved in the Burger Chef robbery. According 00:14:06.590 --> 00:14:09.250 to the letter writer, the plan had only been 00:14:09.250 --> 00:14:11.429 to rob the restaurant and to tie the victims 00:14:11.429 --> 00:14:15.049 up, but things had spiraled out of control. One 00:14:15.049 --> 00:14:17.830 man did the shooting, one did the stabbing, and 00:14:17.830 --> 00:14:21.149 a third sat in the car. The letter claimed that 00:14:21.149 --> 00:14:23.529 this third man had been surprised by the killings 00:14:23.529 --> 00:14:26.049 and even tried to stop them, yelling out run 00:14:26.049 --> 00:14:29.269 when the first victim was shot. The writer begged 00:14:29.269 --> 00:14:32.149 for immunity for this third participant, promising 00:14:32.149 --> 00:14:35.570 that he would confess if he was protected. Police 00:14:35.570 --> 00:14:38.830 will offer immunity publicly in the paper, but 00:14:38.830 --> 00:14:41.090 no one ever comes forward claiming to be the 00:14:41.090 --> 00:14:44.720 third man or the letter writer. I don't know 00:14:44.720 --> 00:14:46.860 the full contents of the letter, but from what 00:14:46.860 --> 00:14:49.559 was published, there were no new details in the 00:14:49.559 --> 00:14:53.039 letter.
