Today, we are talking about 00:02:52.719 --> 00:02:56.780 the missing person case of Roger Ellison. And 00:02:56.780 --> 00:03:00.539 this takes place in February of 1981 in Cedar 00:03:00.539 --> 00:03:03.879 Edge, Colorado. But first, a little bit about 00:03:03.879 --> 00:03:09.000 Roger. Roger is 17 years old in 1981. He is a 00:03:09.000 --> 00:03:11.259 senior honor roll student at Cedar Edge High 00:03:11.259 --> 00:03:13.900 School, but was already looking forward to college. 00:03:14.539 --> 00:03:17.300 He'd been accepted to Western State College in 00:03:17.300 --> 00:03:20.639 Gunnison, Colorado, and he had won a skiing scholarship 00:03:20.639 --> 00:03:23.099 and had already put a deposit down and picked 00:03:23.099 --> 00:03:26.300 out his dorm room. Roger was a gifted skier. 00:03:26.659 --> 00:03:29.639 He had a dream of being on the U .S. national 00:03:29.639 --> 00:03:32.500 ski team, like his older sister had done a decade 00:03:32.500 --> 00:03:36.150 before him. He was the youngest of four siblings 00:03:36.150 --> 00:03:39.110 and the only one left at home. The rest of his 00:03:39.110 --> 00:03:41.449 siblings were older and married at this time. 00:03:42.110 --> 00:03:44.969 Right before the timeline picks up, Roger had 00:03:44.969 --> 00:03:47.750 competed in ski races in Telluride, Colorado. 00:03:48.430 --> 00:03:51.289 He had been disappointed by the outcome. He was 00:03:51.289 --> 00:03:54.409 hoping to secure a place on the U .S. ski B team, 00:03:54.629 --> 00:03:57.689 but had failed to. His parents say that he was 00:03:57.689 --> 00:03:59.650 disappointed but was already looking forward 00:03:59.650 --> 00:04:02.009 to the next race, which was coming up that weekend. 00:04:02.860 --> 00:04:07.199 And now, a timeline of events. Tuesday, February 00:04:07.199 --> 00:04:12.060 10th, 1981. Roger started the day very normally. 00:04:12.580 --> 00:04:14.740 He was eating breakfast in the kitchen with his 00:04:14.740 --> 00:04:17.620 mother when he noticed the weather outside. It 00:04:17.620 --> 00:04:20.160 looked like it was going to snow. He told his 00:04:20.160 --> 00:04:22.300 mom it was a good sign for the upcoming race 00:04:22.300 --> 00:04:26.079 in Aspen that weekend. Roger got ready and left 00:04:26.079 --> 00:04:29.519 for school. He had his yellow backpack and $3 00:04:29.519 --> 00:04:33.060 for lunch. He boarded the bus and headed to Cedar 00:04:33.060 --> 00:04:35.259 Edge High School, which was about six miles away 00:04:35.259 --> 00:04:38.600 from his home. Once at school, Roger caught up 00:04:38.600 --> 00:04:41.079 with his friend and locker mate at their shared 00:04:41.079 --> 00:04:46.779 locker, number 191. Roger shared the locker with 00:04:46.779 --> 00:04:49.819 his friend Mitch. Mitch was just about to slam 00:04:49.819 --> 00:04:51.879 the locker door shut when Roger called out for 00:04:51.879 --> 00:04:54.939 him to leave it open. Roger and Mitch chatted 00:04:54.939 --> 00:04:58.160 for a second. Roger was dropping off some books 00:04:58.160 --> 00:05:00.339 at the locker and grabbing some stuff that he 00:05:00.339 --> 00:05:03.220 needed for the day. Mitch headed off to class 00:05:03.220 --> 00:05:06.540 while Roger was finishing up at the locker. Roger 00:05:06.540 --> 00:05:09.860 told him he would catch up. This appears to be 00:05:09.860 --> 00:05:13.920 the last confirmed sighting of Roger. Roger never 00:05:13.920 --> 00:05:17.339 attended any classes that day. Even though Roger's 00:05:17.339 --> 00:05:20.819 attendance was perfect up until this point, his 00:05:20.819 --> 00:05:24.360 absence was not reported to his parents. Rogers' 00:05:24.480 --> 00:05:26.339 parents didn't know anything was wrong until 00:05:26.339 --> 00:05:29.439 he failed to get home from school that day. His 00:05:29.439 --> 00:05:32.279 mother, Evelyn, says, quote, When he didn't come 00:05:32.279 --> 00:05:35.259 on the bus, we thought he'd call. My husband 00:05:35.259 --> 00:05:38.199 and I waiting up all night. The next morning, 00:05:38.259 --> 00:05:41.240 we called the sheriff. He told us we had to wait 00:05:41.240 --> 00:05:44.899 48 hours before he could begin a search. We tried 00:05:44.899 --> 00:05:47.199 to explain that Rogers never done anything like 00:05:47.199 --> 00:05:50.120 that before, that he always called or left us 00:05:50.120 --> 00:05:53.250 a note on the kitchen table. This time, there 00:05:53.250 --> 00:05:56.850 was nothing. End quote. Like Evelyn says in her 00:05:56.850 --> 00:05:59.069 statement, when they tried to call police that 00:05:59.069 --> 00:06:02.290 next day, Wednesday, February 11th, when Roger 00:06:02.290 --> 00:06:05.689 failed to come home all night, the police didn't 00:06:05.689 --> 00:06:08.790 take it seriously. They assumed Roger was with 00:06:08.790 --> 00:06:12.149 friends or maybe with a girlfriend. His parents 00:06:12.149 --> 00:06:15.589 stressed that this was not the case. He had only 00:06:15.589 --> 00:06:17.949 taken his lunch money and the clothes he was 00:06:17.949 --> 00:06:22.019 wearing to school. His skis, his car, his motorcycle, 00:06:22.220 --> 00:06:25.540 and bank account were all untouched. Not wanting 00:06:25.540 --> 00:06:27.279 to wait for the police to start their search, 00:06:27.660 --> 00:06:30.480 Evelyn and her husband, Ernest, start searching. 00:06:31.500 --> 00:06:34.839 She says, quote, we drove down back roads, we 00:06:34.839 --> 00:06:37.959 combed the woods, we walked ditches. Gradually, 00:06:37.959 --> 00:06:41.240 it dawned on us that something terrible had happened 00:06:41.240 --> 00:06:45.100 to Roger and was happening to us. Suddenly, I 00:06:45.100 --> 00:06:47.980 was living every mother's nightmare, end quote. 00:06:48.960 --> 00:06:51.819 Over that weekend, Roger has been missing for 00:06:51.819 --> 00:06:54.759 four days. His parents hope that he'll show up 00:06:54.759 --> 00:06:56.879 to the race in Aspen since he had already paid 00:06:56.879 --> 00:07:00.120 the entry fee. But he didn't show up to the race. 00:07:01.300 --> 00:07:04.079 It doesn't appear that any major searches were 00:07:04.079 --> 00:07:06.779 done for Roger at this point in his disappearance. 00:07:07.600 --> 00:07:10.819 On February 25th, so Roger has been missing for 00:07:10.819 --> 00:07:14.180 15 days, and police believe that he's a runaway 00:07:14.180 --> 00:07:17.519 at this point. They believe that he had run away 00:07:17.519 --> 00:07:20.480 to a ski resort and found a job or was looking 00:07:20.480 --> 00:07:23.879 for a job. When asked about the length of time 00:07:23.879 --> 00:07:26.639 and the fact that he hadn't contacted his parents 00:07:26.639 --> 00:07:30.439 in 15 days, the police said that it wasn't unusual 00:07:30.439 --> 00:07:34.199 for teenagers to behave this way. His parents, 00:07:34.279 --> 00:07:36.620 however, are worried sick and think something 00:07:36.620 --> 00:07:39.959 terrible has happened to their son. On March 00:07:39.959 --> 00:07:43.600 11, 1981, Roger has been missing for a month 00:07:43.600 --> 00:07:47.819 at this point, and it's his 18th birthday. Police 00:07:47.819 --> 00:07:50.240 and his parents are hoping that he'll reach out 00:07:50.240 --> 00:07:53.339 now that he's officially an adult and let them 00:07:53.339 --> 00:07:55.920 know where he is. But the phone doesn't ring, 00:07:56.040 --> 00:08:01.319 and he never calls. In May of 1982, so it's been 00:08:01.319 --> 00:08:04.620 15 months since Roger vanished, and his father 00:08:04.620 --> 00:08:08.199 has also passed away as well. Rogers' family 00:08:08.199 --> 00:08:10.839 firmly believed that it was due to the heartbreak 00:08:10.839 --> 00:08:14.759 of his youngest son vanishing. At this point, 00:08:14.939 --> 00:08:18.660 Delty County Sheriff Detective Keith Weibel says, 00:08:18.800 --> 00:08:21.860 It looks like Roger Ellison just disappeared 00:08:21.860 --> 00:08:24.720 into thin air, but I know that can't happen. 00:08:25.160 --> 00:08:28.579 We've never had a single solid lead. We can't 00:08:28.579 --> 00:08:31.660 find a trace of where he went. This case has 00:08:31.660 --> 00:08:34.700 turned me into a blithering idiot. I've known 00:08:34.700 --> 00:08:37.080 the Ellison for years. They're a good family, 00:08:37.200 --> 00:08:40.580 and I gradually became convinced Roger wasn't 00:08:40.580 --> 00:08:44.220 a runaway. There was absolutely no evidence of 00:08:44.220 --> 00:08:48.019 a drug problem, no hint of mental illness, nothing 00:08:48.019 --> 00:08:50.360 to indicate Roger had been the slightest bit 00:08:50.360 --> 00:08:54.500 depressed." Investigators have asked the FBI 00:08:54.500 --> 00:08:57.340 to take a look at the case, but the FBI refuses 00:08:57.340 --> 00:09:00.779 since there is no evidence that Roger ever crossed 00:09:00.779 --> 00:09:03.679 state lines or that even a crime has been committed. 00:09:04.919 --> 00:09:07.220 However, a break in the case appears to come 00:09:07.220 --> 00:09:10.379 by the end of June of 1982, so just a few months 00:09:10.379 --> 00:09:13.279 later. Roger has been missing for a year and 00:09:13.279 --> 00:09:17.179 a half. And police say that Roger was seen alive 00:09:17.179 --> 00:09:21.679 as recently as April of 1982, so just a few months 00:09:21.679 --> 00:09:25.159 before this. Roger was seen working at a plant 00:09:25.159 --> 00:09:29.220 nursery in Mississippi up until April. A co -worker 00:09:29.220 --> 00:09:31.960 at the nursery reported it after seeing a story 00:09:31.960 --> 00:09:34.980 about Roger being missing. Delta County Sheriff 00:09:34.980 --> 00:09:38.120 says, quote, Ellison had been on the nursery 00:09:38.120 --> 00:09:41.539 property in April, but he left and nobody knew 00:09:41.539 --> 00:09:44.590 where he was going. We were close, but not close 00:09:44.590 --> 00:09:48.169 enough. If Roger reads anything about this, we're 00:09:48.169 --> 00:09:50.830 urging him to please contact his mother as soon 00:09:50.830 --> 00:09:54.330 as possible. End quote. Police do believe that 00:09:54.330 --> 00:09:57.049 this is a good lead and confirm that the person 00:09:57.049 --> 00:10:00.230 at the nursery was using Roger's name and social 00:10:00.230 --> 00:10:04.730 security number. However, years later, police 00:10:04.730 --> 00:10:08.649 will say that this sighting was a hoax. But this 00:10:08.649 --> 00:10:11.629 lead seems to stall the investigation for years, 00:10:11.669 --> 00:10:13.909 as it appears that Roger just didn't want to 00:10:13.909 --> 00:10:17.070 be found. But again, police say that this whole 00:10:17.070 --> 00:10:21.429 sighting was just a hoax. However, by April of 00:10:21.429 --> 00:10:25.029 1985, so it's been four years since Roger vanished, 00:10:25.250 --> 00:10:27.610 and his mother is still trying to get coverage 00:10:27.610 --> 00:10:30.690 for her son's case. She doesn't believe that 00:10:30.690 --> 00:10:32.870 he simply ran away or doesn't want to be found. 00:10:33.110 --> 00:10:35.690 She thinks something nefarious happened to him. 00:10:36.649 --> 00:10:40.409 She also confirms that even after all these years, 00:10:40.470 --> 00:10:43.710 his bank account, which had over $1 ,000 in it, 00:10:43.830 --> 00:10:48.590 was still sitting untouched. In 1989, so it's 00:10:48.590 --> 00:10:51.649 been over eight years since Roger vanished, and 00:10:51.649 --> 00:10:54.350 the new Delta County Sheriff Bill Blair says, 00:10:54.509 --> 00:10:58.149 quote, we have followed lead after lead after 00:10:58.149 --> 00:11:01.409 lead, but nothing has panned out. It's really 00:11:01.409 --> 00:11:03.269 tragic that we can't come up with something, 00:11:03.470 --> 00:11:07.659 end quote. There have been sightings of Roger 00:11:07.659 --> 00:11:10.220 over the years that have been reported to police. 00:11:10.899 --> 00:11:13.600 There were reports of Roger living in a commune 00:11:13.600 --> 00:11:16.740 in California. There was a sighting of him at 00:11:16.740 --> 00:11:19.960 a singles bar in Pittsburgh. And then a woman 00:11:19.960 --> 00:11:22.080 in Jacksonville, Florida, said that she had a 00:11:22.080 --> 00:11:24.799 child with a drifter that fit Roger's description. 00:11:25.600 --> 00:11:28.960 But none of these leads panned out. Investigators 00:11:28.960 --> 00:11:31.039 say that in each and every one of these instances, 00:11:31.259 --> 00:11:34.139 it was just someone who looked a lot like Roger. 00:11:34.909 --> 00:11:39.190 In March of 1994, so it's been 13 years since 00:11:39.190 --> 00:11:41.909 Roger disappeared, and police are taking another 00:11:41.909 --> 00:11:45.289 look at the case. They decide to re -interview 00:11:45.289 --> 00:11:47.710 classmates that were at school with Roger at 00:11:47.710 --> 00:11:51.269 the time. During this process, a tip surfaces. 00:11:52.190 --> 00:11:55.149 The tip is around a teacher that was at Cedar 00:11:55.149 --> 00:11:58.750 Edge High School when Roger vanished. Pash had 00:11:58.750 --> 00:12:01.570 taught psychology and coached wrestling at the 00:12:01.570 --> 00:12:05.500 high school. Pash was also known to Roger's family. 00:12:05.960 --> 00:12:09.200 He had stopped by the Ellison's house after Roger 00:12:09.200 --> 00:12:11.720 vanished to tell his parents that he had been 00:12:11.720 --> 00:12:15.179 counseling Roger at his home before he disappeared. 00:12:15.919 --> 00:12:19.059 He shared with his family that Roger was suicidal, 00:12:19.360 --> 00:12:21.919 but this didn't sound right to Roger's parents. 00:12:22.600 --> 00:12:24.960 They didn't know the counseling sessions were 00:12:24.960 --> 00:12:28.039 happening and were even more surprised as Roger 00:12:28.039 --> 00:12:30.840 had expressed that he didn't like Pash as a teacher. 00:12:31.820 --> 00:12:34.679 While it's unclear exactly what the tip was, 00:12:35.039 --> 00:12:39.000 it prompts a search of Pasha's former home. At 00:12:39.000 --> 00:12:42.000 this point, the home had been turned into a mortuary. 00:12:43.299 --> 00:12:46.259 Police bring in ground -penetrating radar to 00:12:46.259 --> 00:12:49.480 search the grounds. There are six spots that 00:12:49.480 --> 00:12:52.919 show an anomaly underground, four in the yard 00:12:52.919 --> 00:12:57.139 and two under the concrete garage. Police dig 00:12:57.139 --> 00:12:59.679 in the four spots in the yard and nothing is 00:12:59.679 --> 00:13:02.919 found. However, it doesn't appear that they ever 00:13:02.919 --> 00:13:07.519 dug under the garage, so those spots remain unchecked. 00:13:07.960 --> 00:13:12.299 In February of 1998, so it's been 17 years since 00:13:12.299 --> 00:13:15.919 Roger vanished, and Sheriff Blair asks for the 00:13:15.919 --> 00:13:19.360 public's help. He says, quote, someone out there 00:13:19.360 --> 00:13:22.419 knows what happened to him. We don't have a body, 00:13:22.460 --> 00:13:25.080 and even if we found one, we would have to have 00:13:25.080 --> 00:13:27.259 someone involved say, this is what happened. 00:13:28.049 --> 00:13:31.169 Either he went to some house close by or someone 00:13:31.169 --> 00:13:33.509 was there to meet him and pick him up in a car. 00:13:33.870 --> 00:13:36.809 I just don't know what happened to him, end quote. 00:13:37.769 --> 00:13:40.309 During this plea for information, an English 00:13:40.309 --> 00:13:43.289 teacher that Roger had mentioned this about his 00:13:43.289 --> 00:13:46.690 time at school. She said, quote, he used to tell 00:13:46.690 --> 00:13:49.049 me stories that the kids would chase him and 00:13:49.049 --> 00:13:51.889 he would have to hide on rooftops. I don't think 00:13:51.889 --> 00:13:56.289 he fit in all that well, end quote. Later in 00:13:56.289 --> 00:14:00.659 1998, In September, a dying man comes forward, 00:14:01.000 --> 00:14:03.539 saying that he wanted to clear his conscience 00:14:03.539 --> 00:14:07.879 and that he knew what happened to Roger. Police 00:14:07.879 --> 00:14:28.649 report that the man and his friend, quote, Supposedly, 00:14:28.649 --> 00:14:33.029 it was over a bad cocaine deal. Ellison had absconded 00:14:33.029 --> 00:14:35.870 with the money and given it to his friends, end 00:14:35.870 --> 00:14:40.110 quote. The two men walked away and a few minutes 00:14:40.110 --> 00:14:44.149 later heard two gunshots. The two men agreed 00:14:44.149 --> 00:14:47.750 to never talk about it and forget about it until 00:14:47.750 --> 00:14:49.629 one of them wanted to clear their conscience. 00:14:50.509 --> 00:14:54.370 The Hunter friend confirmed the story. They both 00:14:54.370 --> 00:14:57.940 were polygraphed and passed. They also both picked 00:14:57.940 --> 00:15:00.679 a picture of Roger out of a lineup saying that 00:15:00.679 --> 00:15:04.539 he was the young man being restrained. This confession 00:15:04.539 --> 00:15:07.879 prompts a huge police search in the area that 00:15:07.879 --> 00:15:11.059 the hunters pointed out. The Delta County Sheriff, 00:15:11.440 --> 00:15:16.360 CBI, and the FBI all help search the area. They 00:15:16.360 --> 00:15:19.000 even bring in students from an anthropology department 00:15:19.000 --> 00:15:21.860 in case remains are found to help in the process 00:15:21.860 --> 00:15:27.279 of documenting and recovering. No remains were 00:15:27.279 --> 00:15:30.179 found, and this was really the last update we 00:15:30.179 --> 00:15:33.080 get on Roger's case and the last big movement 00:15:33.080 --> 00:15:36.779 on it that I could find. Over the years, Roger's 00:15:36.779 --> 00:15:39.320 case is brought up in papers as part of cold 00:15:39.320 --> 00:15:43.779 cases, but there's no new leads, no new evidence, 00:15:43.919 --> 00:15:47.720 no new information on his case. So with that, 00:15:47.759 --> 00:15:50.139 if you know anything about the disappearance 00:15:50.139 --> 00:15:55.039 of Roger Ellison in February of 1981, or his 00:15:55.039 --> 00:15:58.039 whereabouts today, please call the Delta County 00:15:58.039 --> 00:16:07.019 Sheriff's Office at 970 -874 -2000. And I 00:16:23.759 --> 00:16:26.740 think I may have mentioned this last episode 00:16:26.740 --> 00:16:32.399 when we were covering a case. Sometimes I can't 00:16:32.399 --> 00:16:37.580 write down the questions fast enough, and that's 00:16:37.580 --> 00:16:41.460 definitely the case here for Roger. So if somebody, you 00:29:31.119 --> 00:29:33.880 know, just a month before their 18th birthday 00:29:33.880 --> 00:29:37.319 is going to take off, I think they would just 00:29:37.319 --> 00:29:39.460 take a little bit of money with them, especially, 00:29:39.640 --> 00:29:42.220 you know, 1981. Like there's no debit cards. 00:29:42.460 --> 00:29:48.299 Like people would write checks. But he wasn't 00:29:48.299 --> 00:29:50.039 even doing that.
