And I think understanding these key 00:07:11.649 --> 00:07:19.029 points will help one accomplish that expectation 00:07:19.029 --> 00:07:23.850 or purpose of life to have joy. And so let's 00:07:23.850 --> 00:07:28.529 just talk about those. And the first one is key 00:07:28.529 --> 00:07:33.750 point number one. One needs to understand the 00:07:33.750 --> 00:07:39.129 blessings of the fall of all mankind. That the 00:07:39.129 --> 00:07:42.029 fall was part of the plan of God. It's one of 00:07:42.029 --> 00:07:45.579 the three pillars. of the plan of salvation or 00:07:45.579 --> 00:07:49.139 the plan of redemption. It was a blessing. It's 00:07:49.139 --> 00:07:53.579 a blessing to us to be human, to be fallen, to 00:07:53.579 --> 00:08:00.420 suffer, to experience life, mortality, sin, and 00:08:00.420 --> 00:08:04.139 all of the bitter that we experience in mortality, 00:08:04.420 --> 00:08:12.569 Scott, is such a blessing. The key phrase I think 00:08:12.569 --> 00:08:16.329 that we've tried to emphasize in the past years 00:08:16.329 --> 00:08:20.870 as we've taught this is from C .S. Lewis, that 00:08:20.870 --> 00:08:26.329 redeemed humanity is greater than unfallen humanity 00:08:26.329 --> 00:08:34.190 could have or would have ever been. That is such 00:08:34.190 --> 00:08:38.500 a liberating thought. We get so hung up on how 00:08:38.500 --> 00:08:42.559 hard mortality is and sometimes I think we just 00:08:42.559 --> 00:08:49.059 get so lost in the trials and the tribulations 00:08:49.059 --> 00:08:53.179 of life and we all experience it. But when you 00:08:53.179 --> 00:08:55.539 understand that it's part of the plan of God 00:08:55.539 --> 00:08:59.820 and that all of those things have been not only 00:08:59.820 --> 00:09:04.320 planned, but that God planned for them through 00:09:04.320 --> 00:09:10.740 the gift of His Son in recapitulating or recovering 00:09:10.740 --> 00:09:14.519 or returning, restoring everything that would 00:09:14.519 --> 00:09:18.029 be lost, or everything that would be suffered, 00:09:18.450 --> 00:09:22.029 or every sin that would be committed, or every 00:09:22.029 --> 00:09:27.389 pain. Scott, the Atonement of Jesus Christ covers 00:09:27.389 --> 00:09:32.730 all of it. Understanding the fall and the need, 00:09:33.629 --> 00:09:40.309 the absolute need we have for a Savior and Redeemer, 00:09:40.750 --> 00:09:45.679 and the blessings of being redeemed rather than 00:09:45.679 --> 00:09:50.580 living in a blissful world of no pain, no suffering, 00:09:51.440 --> 00:09:57.440 no hardship, no sin. We would not have been able to 00:10:10.460 --> 00:10:14.960 become like our Heavenly Father, and we would 00:10:14.960 --> 00:10:18.960 not have had a Savior and Redeemer or any sort 00:10:18.960 --> 00:10:22.100 of relationship like we are able to enjoy now 00:10:22.100 --> 00:10:26.370 with Jesus Christ. And you know, 00:10:55.799 --> 00:10:57.460 Scott, there's something that's really missing 00:10:57.460 --> 00:11:01.679 from the Holy Bible, is the blessings of the 00:11:01.679 --> 00:11:05.210 fall. of Adam and Eve, and we not only have in 00:11:05.210 --> 00:11:09.110 the Book of Mormon, but I just love when Eve 00:11:09.110 --> 00:11:11.950 in the temple endowment, when she quotes Moses 00:11:11.950 --> 00:11:15.190 chapter 5, we would have had no children, we 00:11:15.190 --> 00:11:19.009 would have not known joy, you know, that's Moses 00:11:19.009 --> 00:11:23.309 chapter, you want to read it? You got it? Moses 00:11:23.309 --> 00:11:29.470 chapter 5 verse 11. I really, I think this is 00:11:29.470 --> 00:11:32.960 really what, what needs to be understood and 00:11:32.960 --> 00:11:35.940 appreciated about the fall. And it's pretty awesome 00:11:35.940 --> 00:11:38.720 that the temple makes, may spend so much time 00:11:38.720 --> 00:11:42.679 on the fall, which ought to be a clear message 00:11:42.679 --> 00:11:46.059 to us how important that is in the plan of redemption 00:11:46.059 --> 00:11:49.879 and salvation is the essential nature of the 00:11:49.879 --> 00:11:53.840 fall. So they fall, right? And let's read verse 00:11:53.840 --> 00:11:57.480 10 first. Yeah. And that day Adam blessed God 00:11:57.480 --> 00:11:59.820 and was filled and began to prophesy concerning 00:11:59.820 --> 00:12:02.899 the families of the earth saying blessed be the 00:12:02.899 --> 00:12:06.399 name of God for because of my transgression My 00:12:06.399 --> 00:12:08.679 eyes are open. Just just pause on that blessed 00:12:08.679 --> 00:12:12.480 be the name of God for because of my Transgression 00:12:12.480 --> 00:12:15.759 my eyes are opened. What a blessing the fall 00:12:15.759 --> 00:12:19.620 is what a blessing That were fallen that were 00:12:19.620 --> 00:12:24.240 mortal that were human anyway And again in this 00:12:24.240 --> 00:12:27.039 life I shall have joy, and again in the flesh 00:12:27.039 --> 00:12:30.759 I shall see God. One, never 00:12:52.159 --> 00:12:54.879 should have had seed. Two, never would have known 00:12:54.879 --> 00:12:57.639 good and evil. Three, would not have known the 00:12:57.639 --> 00:13:00.179 joy of our redemption, and we could say the joy 00:13:00.179 --> 00:13:04.139 of having a Redeemer, the joy possible through 00:13:04.139 --> 00:13:09.220 Jesus Christ and His redemption. And four, eternal 00:13:09.220 --> 00:13:14.580 life with God becoming like Him. I just think 00:13:14.580 --> 00:13:18.879 it's so powerful and so critical in understanding 00:13:18.879 --> 00:13:22.659 the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ and 00:13:22.659 --> 00:13:25.460 the blessings and gift of the restoration of 00:13:25.460 --> 00:13:29.240 the fullness of the gospel, Scott. So, key number 00:13:29.240 --> 00:13:33.899 one, if you don't feel like you need a Redeemer, 00:13:35.440 --> 00:13:40.200 then we're done. There's no need for us to go 00:13:40.200 --> 00:13:44.940 any further in talking about this, because I 00:13:44.940 --> 00:13:47.919 really think, Scott, that unless you understand 00:13:47.919 --> 00:13:51.500 the fall, the atonement of Jesus Christ makes 00:13:51.500 --> 00:13:57.120 no sense. I agree. In fact, understanding the 00:13:57.120 --> 00:14:01.919 fall is akin to, and it's really not akin to 00:14:01.919 --> 00:14:04.299 anything. I mean, the understanding the fall 00:14:04.299 --> 00:14:07.159 of Adam and Eve stands alone. However, there 00:14:07.159 --> 00:14:11.000 is some kind of, well, I don't even know what 00:14:11.000 --> 00:14:14.370 the word is, similarity. between understanding 00:14:14.370 --> 00:14:18.409 the fall of Adam and Eve and alcoholics and addicts, 00:14:18.409 --> 00:14:21.570 um, understanding how to overcome addictions, 00:14:21.809 --> 00:14:24.950 et cetera. Right. And the first one is, and the 00:14:24.950 --> 00:14:27.490 first one is to understand and recognize that 00:14:27.490 --> 00:14:29.509 we're fallen. I mean, you just said - I'm an 00:14:29.509 --> 00:14:33.950 addict. And in AA, we recognize that I am powerless 00:14:33.950 --> 00:14:36.450 over alcohol and my life has become unmanageable. 00:14:36.450 --> 00:14:38.710 And I think that's the key is the unmanageability 00:14:38.710 --> 00:14:41.590 of our lives. because of the fall, the way that 00:14:41.590 --> 00:14:44.669 we see our lives, right? Without the help of 00:14:44.669 --> 00:14:47.669 God, one might argue, I think successfully, that 00:14:47.669 --> 00:14:50.149 life is unmanageable without the help of God, 00:14:50.169 --> 00:14:53.909 period. And we could get into that a lot. But 00:14:53.909 --> 00:14:57.529 to understand that my life is unmanageable, and 00:14:57.529 --> 00:15:01.330 that was part of God's plan, was for my life 00:15:01.330 --> 00:15:04.409 to be unmanageable, to be full of challenges. 00:15:05.289 --> 00:15:08.129 We have, and I like to say this, I'm teaching 00:15:08.129 --> 00:15:10.970 this class again for the fifth year, fourth year 00:15:10.970 --> 00:15:16.330 actually, at Institute as well, calling. But 00:15:16.330 --> 00:15:19.409 I love when we are talking about the fall, I 00:15:19.409 --> 00:15:21.789 love to ask the question, how many problems that 00:15:21.789 --> 00:15:24.330 are in your life are a direct result of the fall 00:15:24.330 --> 00:15:27.070 of Adam and Eve? And that's something for us, 00:15:27.070 --> 00:15:30.409 I think, to honestly, carefully consider, you 00:15:30.409 --> 00:15:33.129 know, because it's not just about my sin. It's 00:15:33.129 --> 00:15:36.480 about my sin. But it's about anything that separates 00:15:36.480 --> 00:15:39.200 me from the understanding or the feeling of Heavenly 00:15:39.200 --> 00:15:41.200 Father's love and direction and care and all 00:15:41.200 --> 00:15:44.700 those other words for me. And so that can show 00:15:44.700 --> 00:15:47.559 up in all kinds of different ways. My body's 00:15:47.559 --> 00:15:50.480 broken, that's because of the fall. And when 00:15:50.480 --> 00:15:52.419 I say our bodies are broken, I just mean imperfect. 00:15:52.639 --> 00:15:55.299 That's the physical death component of the fall. 00:15:55.620 --> 00:15:58.860 And then we have the spiritual death component 00:15:58.860 --> 00:16:01.220 of the fall. And I really mean that. 00:16:23.429 --> 00:16:28.629 We are spiritually cut off from God. And I know 00:16:28.629 --> 00:16:32.529 that we can have a member of the deity, the Holy 00:16:32.529 --> 00:16:35.950 Ghost, and we can be born again, spiritually 00:16:35.950 --> 00:16:41.309 speaking. I understand that, but we in this life, 00:16:42.740 --> 00:16:47.679 experience spiritual death. And I just don't 00:16:47.679 --> 00:16:50.039 know if we focus on that enough or think about 00:16:50.039 --> 00:16:55.000 that enough. And that's not our fault. That was 00:16:55.000 --> 00:16:59.440 part of the plan, that we would experience spiritual 00:16:59.440 --> 00:17:03.019 death. The scriptures, at least Jacob in 2nd 00:17:03.019 --> 00:17:07.559 Nephi 9, calls that hell. Spiritual death is 00:17:07.559 --> 00:17:10.160 hell, and he knew that in this life we would 00:17:10.160 --> 00:17:15.019 experience hell, and that this mortality is actually 00:17:15.019 --> 00:17:19.380 linked to the equivalent of the telestial kingdom, 00:17:19.799 --> 00:17:22.640 which is referred to as hell in the doctrine. 00:17:22.920 --> 00:17:27.359 Anyway, we experience hell and spiritual death 00:17:27.359 --> 00:17:31.609 in this life. And then there's the other major 00:17:31.609 --> 00:17:36.190 negative, which is physical death, disease, thickness, 00:17:36.789 --> 00:17:40.650 little arthritis and everything else that is 00:17:40.650 --> 00:17:45.450 negative in regards to having a mortal, physical 00:17:45.450 --> 00:17:52.450 flesh and blood body. And, and Scott, it's, it's 00:17:52.450 --> 00:17:56.109 universal and it's not our fault. And even little 00:17:56.109 --> 00:18:01.039 children suffer the fall. It's just a myth in 00:18:01.039 --> 00:18:04.960 the church to think that little babies are fallen. 00:18:06.079 --> 00:18:11.140 Jesus was fallen. Jesus experienced all of the 00:18:11.140 --> 00:18:15.619 fallen aspects of what Adam and Eve did because 00:18:15.619 --> 00:18:19.480 of Mary, his mother. He experienced pain. No one else believes that 00:28:21.869 --> 00:28:26.690 Jesus bled from every pore but us, because it's 00:28:26.690 --> 00:28:28.809 only taught in the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine 00:28:28.809 --> 00:28:32.099 and Covenants. When you talk about Jesus bleeding 00:28:32.099 --> 00:28:36.180 from every pore, that is unique to the restoration 00:28:36.180 --> 00:28:39.440 of the fullness of the gospel. That he—part of it is 00:29:46.490 --> 00:29:51.039 so that he can succor us in our suffering. But 00:29:51.039 --> 00:29:54.359 on the cross, he experienced the full extent 00:29:54.359 --> 00:29:59.660 of spiritual death. And according to Elder Talmage, 00:30:00.099 --> 00:30:03.279 Elder McConkie, and now President Nelson, so 00:30:03.279 --> 00:30:07.859 happy when President Nelson taught that the cross 00:30:07.859 --> 00:30:12.660 is where Gethsemane was not just reenacted, but 00:30:12.660 --> 00:30:19.380 where it was actually intensified. that the pain 00:30:19.380 --> 00:30:22.720 of Gethsemane was intensified on the cross when 00:30:22.720 --> 00:30:26.039 he cries out at 12 noon. The more we participate in 00:46:00.650 --> 00:46:03.429 the ordinances and covenants, the greater our 00:46:03.429 --> 00:46:07.369 faith grows. And it's like a helix progressing 00:46:07.369 --> 00:46:11.250 and becoming greater and greater, until sometime, 00:46:12.329 --> 00:46:18.869 we'll have the faith of God. That's what we all 00:46:18.869 --> 00:46:21.929 aspire for, is to become like our Heavenly Father, 00:46:21.989 --> 00:46:25.929 and that's what He aspires for us to have, is 00:46:25.929 --> 00:46:30.929 to be able to have that level of faith. And if you understand 00:48:12.440 --> 00:48:15.880 our dependence upon Jesus Christ, it should help 00:48:15.880 --> 00:48:19.599 us to know what repentance is not. For example, 00:48:19.820 --> 00:48:25.110 repentance is not the payment or penalty or punishment 00:48:25.110 --> 00:48:29.050 for sin. I know there's restitution, 00:48:38.389 --> 00:48:42.909 I believe in restitution, but that's not repentance 00:48:42.909 --> 00:48:47.469 in regards to crying out to God and asking for 00:48:47.469 --> 00:48:51.099 forgiveness. but so many people never get to 00:48:51.099 --> 00:48:53.840 that point because they think they're the ones 00:48:53.840 --> 00:48:59.900 that have to pay back or be punished for or penalized 00:48:59.900 --> 00:49:04.300 because of their sins, and so we still have so 00:49:04.300 --> 00:49:06.780 many Latter -day Saints who are trying to be 00:49:06.780 --> 00:49:09.719 punished, punishing themselves, really, beating 00:49:09.719 --> 00:49:14.980 themselves up, flogging themselves. Steve Robinson 00:49:14.980 --> 00:49:18.920 said they're self -masochists, spiritual masochists, 00:49:19.239 --> 00:49:21.679 who are just beating themselves up because they 00:49:21.679 --> 00:49:25.000 think they have to suffer or punish themselves 00:49:25.000 --> 00:49:28.590 for their sins. That's not repentance.
