And some believe he was closer to Malachi 00:14:49.100 --> 00:14:53.740 than Isaiah was. And so there's about a 500 -year 00:14:53.740 --> 00:14:57.480 span of arguing over when this book was written. 00:14:58.200 --> 00:15:02.419 For our purposes this morning, it does not matter 00:15:02.419 --> 00:15:06.700 when it was written. Because the promises that 00:15:06.700 --> 00:15:12.039 are in it are yes and amen in Christ. How many 00:15:12.039 --> 00:15:14.919 of you believe that if somebody is looking for 00:15:14.919 --> 00:15:18.460 help, that they ought to be able to find it at 00:15:18.460 --> 00:15:24.200 a church? That if somebody needs food, that if 00:15:24.200 --> 00:15:28.519 they call the church and I answer the phone and 00:15:28.519 --> 00:15:32.080 they say, I need food, that it would be wrong 00:15:32.080 --> 00:15:39.649 for me to say, Sorry, we don't have any. Because 00:15:39.649 --> 00:15:50.769 the churches exist to provide. Amen? And to give. 00:15:51.429 --> 00:15:55.549 In fact, the calling to social ministry is very 00:15:55.549 --> 00:16:00.409 real. To take care of the poor. We're 00:16:31.970 --> 00:16:34.970 doing the work of the kingdom. We're doing the 00:16:34.970 --> 00:16:37.769 work of the kingdom. But God wants to do way 00:16:37.769 --> 00:16:43.590 more than meet your physical needs. God wants 00:16:43.590 --> 00:16:48.590 to touch you in your spirit. And Joel's prophecy 00:16:48.590 --> 00:16:54.149 here is an amazing prophecy. I'm not going to 00:16:54.149 --> 00:16:58.029 attempt to preach every point of this prophetic. 00:16:58.620 --> 00:17:01.659 I want to draw a few things that I believe that 00:17:01.659 --> 00:17:05.680 God wants to speak to us this morning. And the 00:17:05.680 --> 00:17:08.940 first one is this. When God pours His Spirit 00:17:08.940 --> 00:17:17.059 out, He pours it out in abundance. He is a liberal 00:17:17.059 --> 00:17:21.720 God. Some of you aren't too sure about that because 00:17:21.720 --> 00:17:25.920 your view of the word liberal is different. God 00:17:25.920 --> 00:17:31.789 is a liberal God. He gives liberally. There's 00:17:31.789 --> 00:17:35.089 perhaps some ways that we should take up that 00:17:35.089 --> 00:17:41.470 liberality and become like Him. He gives abundantly. 00:17:41.529 --> 00:17:44.970 I want to read from the pulpit Bible commentary. 00:17:45.089 --> 00:17:50.750 I don't often do this. But the word for God pouring 00:17:50.750 --> 00:17:57.200 out His Spirit is the word Shafak. It is a Hebrew 00:17:57.200 --> 00:18:01.440 word. And the word shafak, which is employed 00:18:01.440 --> 00:18:05.220 by the prophet to express the outpouring of the 00:18:05.220 --> 00:18:10.559 Spirit, implies the bestowal of the gift in great 00:18:10.559 --> 00:18:15.339 abundance. I don't even quote Calvin often, but 00:18:15.339 --> 00:18:19.099 listen to this. As Calvin clearly pointed out, 00:18:19.470 --> 00:18:23.589 For shafak, he says, does not mean to merely 00:18:23.589 --> 00:18:30.430 give in drops, but to pour out in great abundance. 00:18:30.930 --> 00:18:36.250 Hallelujah. But God did not pour out the Holy 00:18:36.250 --> 00:18:41.269 Spirit so abundantly or copiously under the law 00:18:41.269 --> 00:18:45.210 as He has since the manifestation of Christ. 00:18:45.490 --> 00:18:49.230 In the Old Testament, There are some awesome 00:18:49.230 --> 00:18:53.710 stories. But the only one that experienced 00:19:00.549 --> 00:19:05.490 the fire was Elijah. In the Old Testament, it 00:19:05.490 --> 00:19:08.430 was here a little, there a little. Some awesome 00:19:08.430 --> 00:19:11.650 things happened to prove God's reality. But the 00:19:11.650 --> 00:19:16.549 abundance after the resurrection of Christ, of 00:19:16.549 --> 00:19:20.029 the outpouring of the Spirit, is for everybody. 00:19:20.210 --> 00:19:25.579 Glory to God. Hallelujah. The Spirit was indeed 00:19:25.579 --> 00:19:29.440 communicated in Old Testament times, but that 00:19:29.440 --> 00:19:33.819 communication was restricted in two ways, in 00:19:33.819 --> 00:19:38.420 quantity and in the number of recipients, the 00:19:38.420 --> 00:19:42.920 former comparatively scanty and the latter few. 00:19:43.500 --> 00:19:47.400 Whereas the word here applied to its communication 00:19:47.400 --> 00:19:54.390 implies a rich supply. like a copious rainfall. 00:19:55.490 --> 00:20:00.210 After the specification of the time and the mention 00:20:00.210 --> 00:20:04.609 of the blessing, with its implied plentifulness, 00:20:04.630 --> 00:20:11.250 comes its wide diffusion. The term all flesh does not mean 00:20:27.890 --> 00:20:30.650 that every single person in the world is going 00:20:30.650 --> 00:20:33.329 to experience the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. 00:20:34.190 --> 00:20:40.329 The term all flesh means that all types of people, 00:20:40.529 --> 00:20:47.089 any type of person, can receive the outpouring 00:20:47.089 --> 00:20:52.779 of the Holy Spirit. God's blessing for your life 00:20:52.779 --> 00:20:59.519 is very real. Amen? And it is abundant. And so 00:20:59.519 --> 00:21:07.619 the author, Joel, goes on and he describes some 00:21:07.619 --> 00:21:12.220 of that flesh. First of all, it is open to your 00:21:12.220 --> 00:21:19.849 sons and your daughters. Amen? Now can I say 00:21:19.849 --> 00:21:23.950 something? That in this society that Joel is 00:21:23.950 --> 00:21:29.390 preaching to, this is a radical statement. The 00:21:29.390 --> 00:21:34.309 Holy Spirit is not just for the men, but the 00:21:34.309 --> 00:21:39.289 Holy Spirit is for the women. The Holy Spirit 00:21:39.289 --> 00:21:44.460 is not limited. to anybody's life in this room. 00:21:44.539 --> 00:21:47.180 Paul said it like this. There is neither male 00:21:47.180 --> 00:21:52.380 nor female. But that the blessing and the abundance 00:21:52.380 --> 00:21:56.000 of God can be poured out on everybody. Glory 00:21:56.000 --> 00:21:59.839 to God. That's so good. Because you know what 00:21:59.839 --> 00:22:03.059 men do? Men try to draw lines. And they try to 00:22:03.059 --> 00:22:06.099 say, this is what makes you in. And this is what 00:22:06.099 --> 00:22:10.549 makes you out. I 00:26:40.799 --> 00:26:47.680 want us to turn to Isaiah chapter 61. This is 00:26:47.680 --> 00:26:53.819 one of the foundational verses of faith church 00:26:53.819 --> 00:27:16.650 and the ministry of Jesus. Verse 2. To comfort 00:27:16.650 --> 00:27:29.460 all who mourn. Now, The power of this verse is 00:27:29.460 --> 00:27:31.880 that it is not just talking about those that 00:27:31.880 --> 00:27:37.259 have been widowed or are widowers in the family 00:27:37.259 --> 00:27:40.880 sense. The power of this verse is that it is 00:27:40.880 --> 00:27:44.579 talking about people that remembered Israel when 00:27:44.579 --> 00:27:48.859 it was free. And now it's not free. And they 00:27:48.859 --> 00:27:51.359 remembered Israel when it was walking right with 00:27:51.359 --> 00:27:54.740 God. And now it's not walking right with God. 00:27:55.200 --> 00:28:00.119 and so they are in mourning. How many of you, 00:28:00.140 --> 00:28:02.779 when you read the newspaper about America, sometimes 00:28:02.779 --> 00:28:09.259 your heart begins to grieve? All is not well 00:28:09.259 --> 00:28:14.259 in the United States of America. And for the 00:28:14.259 --> 00:28:20.920 Christian, it can move us to grieving, to mourning. 00:28:21.559 --> 00:28:25.440 And Isaiah was identifying with the people that 00:28:25.440 --> 00:28:30.240 were mourning over their nation. But the truth 00:28:30.240 --> 00:28:34.140 applies to any that have suffered loss. That 00:28:34.140 --> 00:28:39.240 God does not leave you in the state of your mourning. 00:28:39.519 --> 00:28:44.079 And that's important. Now, there's a progression 00:28:44.079 --> 00:28:49.359 here. And at the end of verse 2, it says, to 00:28:49.359 --> 00:28:53.799 comfort all who mourn. And if you are in a fresh 00:28:53.799 --> 00:28:57.799 place of suffering loss, then you are supposed 00:28:57.799 --> 00:29:01.400 to be in the place of mourning. Don't let people 00:29:01.400 --> 00:29:04.960 move you out of that place too quickly. That 00:29:04.960 --> 00:29:10.220 is God doing a work inside of you. And the first 00:29:10.220 --> 00:29:13.579 thing that God does when we are mourning is He 00:29:13.579 --> 00:29:18.160 comes alongside of us and He comforts us. He 00:29:18.160 --> 00:29:22.980 comforts all who mourn. He is not saying, come 00:29:22.980 --> 00:29:27.319 on, buck up and get over it. He's not saying 00:29:27.319 --> 00:29:31.420 that. Jesus said, come to me all who are weary 00:29:31.420 --> 00:29:36.460 and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. And 00:29:36.460 --> 00:29:39.920 you shall find rest for your souls. What is the 00:29:39.920 --> 00:29:43.519 work of the Holy Spirit that Jesus said? It is 00:29:43.519 --> 00:29:47.839 the work of comforting. And if you have suffered 00:29:47.839 --> 00:29:51.500 loss and you are grieving, perhaps you got fired 00:29:51.500 --> 00:29:54.839 from a job you love, or perhaps a business that 00:29:54.839 --> 00:29:58.180 you started has Come to the place where it can 00:29:58.180 --> 00:30:02.259 no longer go on. Guess what you are probably 00:30:02.259 --> 00:30:06.839 going to feel? You're going to feel a measure 00:30:06.839 --> 00:30:11.960 of mourning. Even when Elijah mourned, God didn't 00:30:11.960 --> 00:30:15.119 at first come alongside and call him to change. 00:30:15.279 --> 00:30:19.460 He first came alongside of him and comforted 00:30:19.460 --> 00:30:23.000 him. And I want to thank God for the comfort 00:30:23.000 --> 00:30:27.339 of the Holy Spirit. Amen. To appoint those who 00:31:23.529 --> 00:31:31.109 mourn in Zion. And what that word embodies is 00:31:31.109 --> 00:31:36.049 the beginning of a turning point. That you are 00:31:36.049 --> 00:31:41.049 no longer in the place of mourning, but now you 00:31:41.049 --> 00:31:45.289 are in a place of preparation. Because you've 00:31:45.289 --> 00:31:50.250 lost something, but God is not done with you. 00:31:52.950 --> 00:31:59.000 Amen? You've lost something, but God is not done 00:31:59.000 --> 00:32:03.339 with you. Because if he was done with you, you 00:32:03.339 --> 00:32:07.279 would not be here anymore. But in today's culture, we don't have 00:33:10.589 --> 00:33:14.950 that. We have a few days where maybe a celebration 00:33:14.950 --> 00:33:16.930 of life, and then you're on your own, and you're 00:33:16.930 --> 00:33:18.750 supposed to just muddle through life and just 00:33:18.750 --> 00:33:22.559 get over it. And sometimes I think it takes a 00:33:22.559 --> 00:33:26.799 little bit longer than that.
