We are in Luke 00:01:08.400 --> 00:01:12.819 22. Once again, last week we read Luke 22 a couple 00:01:12.819 --> 00:01:16.780 of times. I preached Luke 22 yesterday. I loved 00:01:16.780 --> 00:01:18.939 being in it. It's 71 verses. It's very long. 00:01:19.060 --> 00:01:21.180 I hope and pray you read it again today. Fresh 00:01:21.180 --> 00:01:23.540 eyes, fresh ears. And I just want to share with 00:01:23.540 --> 00:01:25.799 you a little bit at the very, very end of Luke 00:01:25.799 --> 00:01:29.840 22. As I was reading through it again and looking 00:01:29.840 --> 00:01:32.219 and seeing what the Lord would have me to learn 00:01:32.219 --> 00:01:34.640 and know today, here was an encouragement that 00:01:34.640 --> 00:01:38.579 I found. The story in Luke 22, it begins with 00:01:38.579 --> 00:01:41.579 Jesus and his disciples getting ready for the 00:01:41.579 --> 00:01:44.939 Passover meal together. But just before that 00:01:44.939 --> 00:01:48.640 happens, a guy named Judas betrays Jesus. He 00:01:48.640 --> 00:01:52.280 has a secret meeting. All that goes down. Jesus 00:01:52.280 --> 00:01:55.640 then gets some disciples together to find a place 00:01:55.640 --> 00:01:58.650 to serve Passover. Then institutes the Lord's 00:01:58.650 --> 00:02:02.109 Supper together. Institutes this wonderful time 00:02:02.109 --> 00:02:05.569 that they get to remember not only the Exodus 00:02:05.569 --> 00:02:08.150 anymore, but now what Jesus is going to do to 00:02:08.150 --> 00:02:11.969 deliver the mankind from sin. So we first see 00:02:11.969 --> 00:02:14.750 in Exodus, we looked at last week, the Passover 00:02:14.750 --> 00:02:18.110 meal was instituted whenever they left the bondage 00:02:18.110 --> 00:02:21.449 and slavery of Egypt. Now Jesus is instituting 00:02:21.449 --> 00:02:23.780 a new Passover meal. Passover meal, a new meal 00:02:23.780 --> 00:02:25.939 that's the Lord's Supper, where he is going to 00:02:25.939 --> 00:02:28.949 say to remember this day. Passover is now over. 00:02:29.090 --> 00:02:31.789 The Passover meal is no longer going to be the 00:02:31.789 --> 00:02:34.250 same. Now you're going to remember the time I 00:02:34.250 --> 00:02:37.810 freed you from sin. There is one more meal coming 00:02:37.810 --> 00:02:40.189 that has to do with a lamb. We find that in the 00:02:40.189 --> 00:02:42.129 book of Revelation. It's the marriage supper 00:02:42.129 --> 00:02:45.569 of the lamb. I love how the Lord has shown us 00:02:45.569 --> 00:02:48.789 through multiple meals in the Scripture. There's 00:02:48.789 --> 00:02:51.389 the Passover that was the lamb that was slain. 00:02:51.469 --> 00:02:53.770 Then there was the Lord's Supper about Jesus 00:02:53.770 --> 00:02:55.669 being the perfect lamb that's slain. And then 00:02:55.669 --> 00:02:57.009 there's the marriage supper of the lamb. lamb 00:02:57.009 --> 00:02:58.729 where everything is restored and we're all back 00:02:58.729 --> 00:03:01.370 to good with the Lord and everything's restored. 00:03:01.729 --> 00:03:03.550 It's wonderful. It's beautiful. There's a lot 00:03:03.550 --> 00:03:05.189 in scripture. I don't want to get into that much 00:03:05.189 --> 00:03:08.599 today, but... As we look at this, after the Lord's 00:03:08.599 --> 00:03:11.979 Supper is instituted, then we see Jesus saying 00:03:11.979 --> 00:03:14.000 that there's a betrayer that's there, and they 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:15.620 all kind of freak out. Then there's a debate 00:03:15.620 --> 00:03:17.580 that breaks out that says who's the greatest, 00:03:17.659 --> 00:03:21.020 which one of us is better. Then Jesus tells Peter, 00:03:21.319 --> 00:03:22.919 listen, I've been praying for you. Satan wanted 00:03:22.919 --> 00:03:25.539 you, but I've prayed for you. And because I've 00:03:25.539 --> 00:03:27.780 prayed for you, your faith may falter a bit, 00:03:27.860 --> 00:03:29.520 but it's not going to fail. So just like there's three meals of 00:03:51.060 --> 00:03:53.180 the lamb, there's also three gardens. There's 00:03:53.180 --> 00:03:55.580 the Garden of Eden where sin entered in. There's 00:03:55.580 --> 00:03:57.979 the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus fought the 00:03:57.979 --> 00:04:00.680 battle of sin to go and take on the cross. And 00:04:00.680 --> 00:04:03.219 then there's the Garden Tomb that Jesus stepped 00:04:03.219 --> 00:04:06.300 out of the tomb into a... new garden, giving 00:04:06.300 --> 00:04:09.620 us a new hope and a new life and a restoration 00:04:09.620 --> 00:04:11.939 from all things. And it's beautiful and incredible 00:04:11.939 --> 00:04:14.400 and awesome. There's a lot to be said about that. 00:04:14.460 --> 00:04:16.360 I would love to jump into that with you. But 00:04:16.360 --> 00:04:18.500 here's what I want to tell you today. As we read 00:04:18.500 --> 00:04:20.660 through after Jesus is in the Garden of Gethsemane, 00:04:20.660 --> 00:04:24.079 he's praying. He's praying like sweat, like drops 00:04:24.079 --> 00:04:27.759 of blood. The people come. Judas leads a mob 00:04:27.759 --> 00:04:31.959 to come and arrest Jesus. He gets arrested, and 00:04:31.959 --> 00:04:33.899 then he gets taken into custody. Here's where 00:04:33.899 --> 00:04:35.360 I want to pick up just a little bit of reading 00:04:35.360 --> 00:04:38.620 today in Luke 22, beginning down in verse number 00:04:38.620 --> 00:04:41.779 63. I want to read some scripture with you today, 00:04:41.899 --> 00:04:43.500 and I want to just talk about it for a second, 00:04:43.620 --> 00:04:45.399 give you a little bit of a new mercy maybe that 00:04:45.399 --> 00:04:48.000 God gave me today, and I hope and pray it's encouraging 00:04:48.000 --> 00:04:50.360 to you, and whatever God's telling you, write 00:04:50.360 --> 00:04:53.029 it down. I promise. Write it down. The more you 00:04:53.029 --> 00:04:54.589 write down, the more you can remember. The more 00:04:54.589 --> 00:04:56.269 you can remember, the more you can grow. The 00:04:56.269 --> 00:04:57.790 more you can grow, the closer you get with the 00:04:57.790 --> 00:04:59.870 Lord and the more effective you become in your 00:04:59.870 --> 00:05:02.589 ministry that God's called you to. Here we go. 00:05:02.670 --> 00:05:05.790 In Luke chapter 22, down in verse number 63. 00:05:06.350 --> 00:05:09.009 Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody 00:05:09.009 --> 00:05:12.529 were mocking him as they beat him. They also 00:05:12.529 --> 00:05:16.009 blindfolded him and kept asking him, prophesy, 00:05:16.089 --> 00:05:19.639 who is it that struck you? And they said many 00:05:19.639 --> 00:05:22.959 other things against him, blaspheming him. I 00:05:22.959 --> 00:05:25.360 want to stop and take a pause right there and 00:05:25.360 --> 00:05:28.839 just say this is a horrible scene. Jesus is about 00:05:28.839 --> 00:05:32.560 to go on trial. He's in custody, being held. 00:05:32.879 --> 00:05:35.379 And what's going on? The people that are holding 00:05:35.379 --> 00:05:38.560 him in custody are the ones who are mocking him 00:05:38.560 --> 00:05:41.000 and beating him. I want to take a second here 00:05:41.000 --> 00:05:44.220 and just say I would like to take our perspective 00:05:44.220 --> 00:05:47.829 up into the heavenlies. And I want you to think 00:05:47.829 --> 00:05:50.550 about this. Jesus has been arrested for nothing 00:05:50.550 --> 00:05:53.120 he did wrong. Now, as they're holding him in 00:05:53.120 --> 00:05:55.319 custody, why is he in custody so long? What's 00:05:55.319 --> 00:05:57.620 going on? Well, if you read in other gospel accounts, 00:05:57.800 --> 00:05:59.779 Mark and John specifically give a little bit 00:05:59.779 --> 00:06:01.779 more instruction on what happens during this 00:06:01.779 --> 00:06:06.319 time. But Jesus was taken to Annas' house. Annas 00:06:06.319 --> 00:06:09.899 was a high priest, a former high priest. He was 00:06:09.899 --> 00:06:11.699 one that had a lot. He was very wealthy. He was 00:06:11.699 --> 00:06:13.600 very powerful. He wasn't the current high priest. 00:06:13.660 --> 00:06:16.259 That was Caiaphas. But here's what's going on. 00:06:16.360 --> 00:06:19.639 These guys are trying to now negotiate with people, 00:06:19.839 --> 00:06:23.259 pay the right testimony. Get false accusations 00:06:23.259 --> 00:06:26.180 to come and make sure everybody's on their side, 00:06:26.319 --> 00:06:29.839 that nobody's on Jesus' side. I think that is 00:06:29.839 --> 00:06:33.819 a very maybe important thing for us to notice. 00:06:33.939 --> 00:06:36.120 The world is going to try to get you on their 00:06:36.120 --> 00:06:39.339 side. That's what's going to happen. In this 00:06:39.339 --> 00:06:41.879 scene, that's what's taking place. The more I 00:06:41.879 --> 00:06:43.579 read it, the more it makes me a little bit chilled 00:06:43.579 --> 00:06:45.779 to think about you're on one side or the other. 00:06:46.120 --> 00:06:48.860 And this is when these moments that while Jesus 00:06:48.860 --> 00:06:51.420 is in custody getting beat up, The world is trying 00:06:51.420 --> 00:06:53.300 to lure you in. They're trying to build a case 00:06:53.300 --> 00:06:57.680 against Jesus. And what goes on? These soldiers 00:06:57.680 --> 00:07:00.259 that are holding him, the men that are watching 00:07:00.259 --> 00:07:03.279 him, are not just letting him sit in a cell by 00:07:03.279 --> 00:07:07.120 himself. They're beating him. They're slapping 00:07:07.120 --> 00:07:08.879 him. They're hitting him. They're blind. They're 00:07:08.879 --> 00:07:12.579 making a game out of this. Can you imagine? Let's 00:07:12.579 --> 00:07:14.899 go up to the heavenlies for just a moment. Can 00:07:14.899 --> 00:07:17.779 you imagine the angels in heaven seeing this? 00:07:18.929 --> 00:07:22.629 I cannot, I mean, we're talking the swords drawn 00:07:22.629 --> 00:07:25.350 the way Peter had drawn a sword just a couple 00:07:25.350 --> 00:07:27.970 of hours earlier and cut off the high priest, 00:07:28.069 --> 00:07:32.889 the guard's ear. I see now the angels in heaven 00:07:32.889 --> 00:07:35.709 ready and saying, this is not right. They should 00:07:35.709 --> 00:07:38.649 not, these are men under authority that are now 00:07:38.649 --> 00:07:42.750 mocking the one who came to save them. As they're 00:07:42.750 --> 00:07:44.910 slapping him and as they're beating him, they're 00:07:44.910 --> 00:07:46.490 blindfolded and they're saying, why don't you 00:07:46.490 --> 00:07:49.050 prophesy and tell us which one did it? And Jesus 00:07:49.050 --> 00:07:52.470 doesn't say a word. Can I tell you this? Why? 00:07:53.250 --> 00:07:55.730 Because Jesus didn't come to smite them. He came 00:07:55.730 --> 00:07:58.790 to save them. Like this is a love in these few 00:07:58.790 --> 00:08:02.009 verses that blows my mind. Like how many times 00:08:02.009 --> 00:08:05.589 have I mocked what Jesus was trying to do? Or 00:08:05.589 --> 00:08:08.250 how many times have I done something that went 00:08:08.250 --> 00:08:11.689 against his word and his will? And honestly, 00:08:11.829 --> 00:08:14.610 I think about these guys and the whole time Jesus 00:08:14.610 --> 00:08:18.790 thinking, I've come here to save you. And the 00:08:18.790 --> 00:08:21.689 one that hit him, he probably named his name 00:08:21.689 --> 00:08:25.069 in his head. I know you struck me, but I came 00:08:25.069 --> 00:08:28.209 to save you. You realize, here's the Christian 00:08:28.209 --> 00:08:32.490 faith, if these men who were mocking Jesus and 00:08:32.490 --> 00:08:37.090 beating Jesus, if these men, a few days later, 00:08:37.190 --> 00:08:40.909 accept the gift of salvation, you realize they're 00:08:40.909 --> 00:08:43.750 in heaven with him, right? You realize they get 00:08:43.750 --> 00:08:47.059 to spend eternity in his family. If they don't 00:08:47.059 --> 00:08:49.899 accept the gift of salvation, then they're going 00:08:49.899 --> 00:08:51.960 to stand before a great white throne judgment 00:08:51.960 --> 00:08:55.220 and their names and their beatings and all their 00:08:55.220 --> 00:08:58.299 mockery will be recalled. That is going to happen. 00:08:58.360 --> 00:09:00.580 This is not just a couple of words we read on 00:09:00.580 --> 00:09:04.120 a page. This is the son of God who is getting 00:09:04.120 --> 00:09:07.480 beaten by a bunch of people who have no business 00:09:07.480 --> 00:09:10.720 even having him in custody. They have no business 00:09:10.720 --> 00:09:14.509 in any of this. And yet Jesus is quiet. They 00:09:14.509 --> 00:09:17.110 say, prophesy, tell us which one. And they said 00:09:17.110 --> 00:09:19.809 many other things against him. And, you know, 00:09:19.850 --> 00:09:22.509 the Holy Spirit has inspired the word, and I 00:09:22.509 --> 00:09:24.509 think it is very important to note, here's what 00:09:24.509 --> 00:09:27.129 the Holy Spirit wanted to make sure and have 00:09:27.129 --> 00:09:30.830 communicated through Dr. Luke to us was that 00:09:30.830 --> 00:09:35.129 in many other things against him, blaspheming 00:09:35.129 --> 00:09:38.070 him. They blasphemed him. Because why? He's the 00:09:38.070 --> 00:09:40.210 Son of God. I cannot imagine the angels in heaven 00:09:40.210 --> 00:09:43.740 ready. We're putting an end to this. Don't slap 00:09:43.740 --> 00:09:47.580 him. He's God. He's the one who seated on the 00:09:47.580 --> 00:09:49.860 throne. He's the one who made everything. He's 00:09:49.860 --> 00:09:51.799 the one that through him, everything is made. 00:09:51.840 --> 00:09:54.220 And now you are making a mockery of this. You're 00:09:54.220 --> 00:09:57.159 beating him. What is going on? The scripture 00:09:57.159 --> 00:09:59.799 keeps going. Let's read a little more. And they said, If 00:10:12.789 --> 00:10:15.809 you are the Christ, tell us. But he said to them, 00:10:15.889 --> 00:10:19.269 If I tell you, you will not believe. And if I 00:10:19.269 --> 00:10:22.669 ask you, you will not answer. But from now on, 00:10:22.669 --> 00:10:25.710 the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand 00:10:25.710 --> 00:10:31.629 of the power of God. So they all said, Are you 00:10:31.629 --> 00:10:34.370 the Son of God then? And he said to them, You 00:10:34.370 --> 00:10:47.620 say that I am. I mean, the power. 00:11:18.799 --> 00:11:22.000 When he says the Son of Man, that is the title 00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:24.659 Jesus used for himself, referring back to Daniel, 00:11:24.879 --> 00:11:26.820 referring back to the Psalms, referring back 00:11:26.820 --> 00:11:28.720 to different places in the Old Testament that 00:11:28.720 --> 00:11:30.580 prophesied that the Son of Man would be a title 00:11:30.580 --> 00:11:33.620 of the Messiah, the Son of God. And the people 00:11:33.620 --> 00:11:35.240 said, so are you saying that you're the Son of 00:11:35.240 --> 00:11:37.940 God? Or are you just saying the Messiah will 00:11:37.940 --> 00:11:39.720 be at the right hand? We all agree the Messiah 00:11:39.720 --> 00:11:41.179 will be at the right hand of the power of God. 00:11:41.259 --> 00:11:44.539 Are you saying that's you? And Jesus uses a phrase, 00:11:44.659 --> 00:11:48.360 uses a term here when he says, What you say is 00:11:48.360 --> 00:11:52.799 exactly right. Yes. And they say, what you just 00:11:52.799 --> 00:11:55.500 said was offense enough to kill you. Could you 00:11:55.500 --> 00:11:58.379 imagine? I read through this, and if I'm not 00:11:58.379 --> 00:12:00.960 careful, I will just think Jesus is standing 00:12:00.960 --> 00:12:03.559 there talking regularly. He is already bruised. 00:12:03.840 --> 00:12:07.360 He's already bleeding. He's already been slapped 00:12:07.360 --> 00:12:11.080 and beaten. He's been verbally abused. He's been 00:12:11.080 --> 00:12:14.799 physically abused. He's been held under false 00:12:14.799 --> 00:12:18.659 pretenses. They've done all of this work to finally 00:12:18.659 --> 00:12:21.539 seize him. They're not letting him go. You realize 00:12:21.539 --> 00:12:24.240 that. There's no option out. There's no way out. 00:12:24.299 --> 00:12:25.580 Nothing Jesus would have said. That's why he 00:12:25.580 --> 00:12:28.879 even said, if I told you, you're not going to 00:12:28.879 --> 00:12:30.679 believe me anyway. You went through all this 00:12:30.679 --> 00:12:33.519 trouble. I was with you every single day in the 00:12:33.519 --> 00:12:35.480 temple teaching, and nobody came up to arrest 00:12:35.480 --> 00:12:38.200 me. Nobody. You waited until the cover of night 00:12:38.200 --> 00:12:41.120 because you're a coward. No matter what I say, 00:12:41.399 --> 00:12:44.460 you're not going to believe it. And in this whole 00:12:44.460 --> 00:12:48.740 time, I can again picture the angels in heaven 00:12:48.740 --> 00:12:51.799 ready to come, ready to show up and say, we are 00:12:51.799 --> 00:12:55.059 turning all of this upside down. This is not 00:12:55.059 --> 00:12:58.759 right. And the love of Jesus kept pursuing and 00:12:58.759 --> 00:13:02.500 kept persisting that this was worth it. In the 00:13:02.500 --> 00:13:04.220 book of Hebrews, it tells us, for the joy set 00:13:04.220 --> 00:13:07.340 before him, he endured the cross. What was the 00:13:07.340 --> 00:13:10.320 joy that was set before him? Well, obeying his 00:13:10.320 --> 00:13:14.059 father, one, and having us, two. The first is 00:13:14.059 --> 00:13:16.840 great. The second, he got kind of a raw deal 00:13:16.840 --> 00:13:19.840 in a lot of us, in all of us. We're not worthy 00:13:19.840 --> 00:13:22.000 of this kind of love. We're not worthy of this 00:13:22.000 --> 00:13:25.879 kind of connection to God. Revive us what we 00:13:25.879 --> 00:13:28.220 deserve, right? We deserve complete separation. 00:13:29.080 --> 00:13:31.480 As I read it over and over again, I just can't 00:13:31.480 --> 00:13:34.539 help but think about this power that he has, 00:13:34.740 --> 00:13:39.200 and yet he was withholding all of that and willingly 00:13:39.200 --> 00:13:43.220 giving his life. As we will read in the next 00:13:43.220 --> 00:13:45.539 couple of days, these may be harder for me to 00:13:45.539 --> 00:13:50.820 get through these episodes because this has changed 00:13:50.820 --> 00:13:54.000 my life. This has changed my heart. This has 00:13:54.000 --> 00:13:55.960 changed the way I live, my purpose, my meaning. 00:13:56.059 --> 00:13:58.379 Everything in my life has been changed because 00:13:58.379 --> 00:14:02.000 of this Jesus who came and did all of this for 00:14:02.000 --> 00:14:05.879 the purpose of bringing me into his family. I 00:14:05.879 --> 00:14:08.529 hope and pray. You know this Jesus. I hope and 00:14:08.529 --> 00:14:11.549 pray you have this same connection to him. I 00:14:11.549 --> 00:14:13.250 hope and pray that it gets richer and deeper 00:14:13.250 --> 00:14:15.909 every day.
