Consequently, he is able to save to 00:02:21.060 --> 00:02:26.300 the uttermost those who draw near to God through 00:02:26.300 --> 00:02:30.139 him. Notice the writer doesn't merely tell us 00:02:30.139 --> 00:02:34.599 that Jesus saves. He tells us why he saves to 00:02:34.599 --> 00:02:37.939 the uttermost. and the answer isn't simply found 00:02:37.939 --> 00:02:41.819 in Calvary, it is found in Christ's continuing 00:02:41.819 --> 00:02:46.560 ministry as our great high priest. For nearly 00:02:46.560 --> 00:02:50.639 three chapters now, the writer of Hebrews has 00:02:50.639 --> 00:02:54.520 barely taken his eyes off of the priesthood of 00:02:54.520 --> 00:02:58.840 Jesus. He has shown us what it means to that 00:02:58.840 --> 00:03:02.360 Jesus belongs to a better order of priest than 00:03:02.360 --> 00:03:05.939 Aaron. He possesses a better priesthood than 00:03:05.939 --> 00:03:09.520 Levi He mediates a better covenant than Moses 00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:11.719 and now in these verses that we're gonna look 00:03:11.719 --> 00:03:14.740 at today verses 20 through 28 He tells us why 00:03:14.740 --> 00:03:19.680 all of this matters and it matters because the 00:03:19.680 --> 00:03:25.159 greatness of your salvation Depends entirely 00:03:25.159 --> 00:03:32.400 on the greatness of your high priest So turn 00:03:32.400 --> 00:03:34.360 with me, if you haven't already, to Hebrews chapter 00:03:34.360 --> 00:03:37.539 7. And he's already explained 00:05:40.980 --> 00:05:44.720 to us in different ways why this order of priesthood 00:05:44.720 --> 00:05:47.980 is better, but here he gives us a very, very 00:05:47.980 --> 00:05:55.360 powerful reason. Because this priesthood that 00:05:55.360 --> 00:06:00.120 Jesus alone has, begins with something that no 00:06:00.120 --> 00:06:05.040 Levitical priesthood ever received. Namely, an 00:06:05.040 --> 00:06:09.199 oath from God himself. Notice it said, and it 00:06:09.199 --> 00:06:11.959 was not without an oath. And then he says, for 00:06:11.959 --> 00:06:14.560 those former high priests in the order of Aaron, 00:06:14.980 --> 00:06:18.980 they didn't get this oath. That is a remarkable 00:06:18.980 --> 00:06:22.139 contrast between the two. Because every priest 00:06:22.519 --> 00:06:26.680 descended from Aunt Erin, entered into the priesthood 00:06:26.680 --> 00:06:29.740 simply because he was born into the right family. 00:06:30.800 --> 00:06:33.000 That's it. But Jesus did not become high priest 00:07:01.560 --> 00:07:05.199 because of his ancestry. He became high priest 00:07:05.199 --> 00:07:07.879 as we've already looked at because God appointed 00:07:07.879 --> 00:07:12.620 him as high priest. And now we are told not only 00:07:12.620 --> 00:07:15.899 did he appoint him, he confirms this appointment 00:07:15.899 --> 00:07:21.360 by an oath. Now, I love to ask questions of scripture. 00:07:22.060 --> 00:07:26.660 when I see something that makes me go, hmm, why? 00:07:27.819 --> 00:07:32.800 So I asked a question here. Why does God provide 00:07:32.800 --> 00:07:35.939 an oath? I mean, think about it. There doesn't need to be an oath for God 00:07:47.379 --> 00:07:51.759 to go, I'm really serious, guys. I'm gonna make 00:07:51.759 --> 00:07:54.959 this oath so I never go back on it Right. I'm 00:07:54.959 --> 00:07:57.459 gonna make this oath to remind myself that I 00:07:57.459 --> 00:08:03.860 shouldn't lie about this God's Word is already 00:08:03.860 --> 00:08:07.120 perfectly trustworthy. That word guarantor is one 00:09:54.580 --> 00:09:58.899 of the richest words textually in this entire 00:09:58.899 --> 00:10:05.139 chapter. It is someone who assumes full responsibility 00:10:05.139 --> 00:10:08.720 for ensuring that an agreement is fulfilled. 00:10:09.389 --> 00:10:14.110 So a guarantor is one who assumes all the responsibility 00:10:14.110 --> 00:10:17.649 that an agreement is going to be fulfilled So 00:10:17.649 --> 00:10:20.970 God the Father is saying I have set Jesus as 00:10:20.970 --> 00:10:24.230 my high priest. Guaranteeing that everyone in the 00:10:43.980 --> 00:10:48.840 new covenant will be saved. Jesus did not come 00:10:48.840 --> 00:10:53.679 simply to announce a new covenant. He came to 00:10:53.679 --> 00:10:58.759 guarantee it. He assumes full responsibility 00:10:58.759 --> 00:11:03.320 for bringing every covenant promise to its completion. 00:11:04.400 --> 00:11:07.559 Stephen Wellam writes that Christ is not merely 00:11:07.559 --> 00:11:10.879 the messenger of a covenant, but its surety. 00:11:11.419 --> 00:11:14.460 Every blessing secured by his blood will certainly 00:11:14.460 --> 00:11:19.179 be accomplished because he himself guarantees 00:11:19.179 --> 00:11:27.120 it. Church, don't miss the comfort of this. Your 00:11:27.120 --> 00:11:33.480 salvation was never built upon your promise to 00:11:33.480 --> 00:11:38.570 God. The former priests, there was a lot 00:14:54.000 --> 00:15:00.259 of them. Why? Because they kept dying. He never says, look how tightly 00:34:34.800 --> 00:34:40.320 you're hanging on to Jesus.
